My other rover, (Warning SD1 content)

Since i recently found my 64 wedgewood blue P6 (see my other posts) i have got to make some space so another of my intended projects must be sacrificed, unfortunately my early series 3500 SD1 is about the most complete so therefore regrettably should be easiest to sell.

I woud like to keep this car as its not only a rare early example but it belonged to A B Smith so has a P6 connection.Ive now fell for my P6 so unless i can find some more cheap storage the SD1 will have to go.

I hope nobody minds but as it has the A B connection i thought i would tell you all about it.

I bought the car a last year after stumbling across it via a friend.

Its a 3500 auto registered 28/6/76 chassis number 1854, it has had two owners from new, the first being A B Smith (C B E) of the "Rover car company" and i beleive was the last chairman of the original Rover Car Company before it became BL, his name still shows on the old V5 and on the bottom of the latest V5c.According to the heritage centre archives it was built on 10/6/76 and dispatched to "Cowry,W.Wallis,Transport Longridge" on 28/6/76 and registered that day.

It has covered a total mileage of 49,900, the chap i bought it off bought it direct from A B smith just over eighteen years ago and has only done 7000 miles in it.It has been garaged from new and this has obviously extended its life as although it has a few marks and dents its very original, 99% rustfree and very solid.Unfortunately the previous owner reversed it into a post some time ago so i would need to repair the rear and tidy it up before i can return it to the road.

Since i bought it ive some research via interenet, books et`c and from what i can make out this car must be one of very few remaining early original unrestored sd1`s around therefore i feel i must bring it back to its former glory. As the car was a rover factory car/A B smiths car it has had a couple of production improvements in its early life ie later 2 strap shelf and later rear badges(I would like to get hold of a couple of early type badges), apart from these items its completely original having never been welded or resprayed and has a decent factory spec including electric windows, stereo cassette, passenger mirror and even has a set of NOS alloys/nuts and caps in the boot(i cant decide which wheels it would look better on).

Here`s some pics.

I'll buy the ding in the boot off you .I havnt got one that colour .Nice car though .Should sell quick- Gerald

Yes, the A B Smith connection is very interesting, and it also sounds very early for an SD1. I wonder if it was in any way a prototype build and therefore escaped the famous SD1 paint process which was the cause of the model's downfall? Might explain what good condition it is in! That colour as I recall went flat very quickly and then peeled(!).

I think it is your destiny to bump into rare early models!
Even if don't quite fancy the interior i really like the clean uncluttered lines of the series 1 and this one looks to be superb.
It would make a nice pair with your early P6. I don't know what your other projects are, but if i were you i wouldn' t sell it.

Thats exactly how i feel but unfortunately i haven`t the room to store it, i haven`t definately decided to get rid off the SD1 yet i am still trying to find somewhere to put so when ive done the P6 i could do the SD and have a lovely pair of early model rovers.
