More electrical problems

Hi,

Please could anyone offer some advice?

I have fitted a new alternator to my P6 V8. There is a slight difference from the old alternator - there is no spade connector for the battery charge on this one just the block connector - i was told that it was not needed on the replacement.

The windscreen wipers and illumination lights on the Dash have stopped working. Fuses are not blown ...... any ideas?

There are a couple of different types of alternator with different connectors. The early 11AC with individual spade connectors for the battery, field +ve, field -ve and the warning light connector (AL) is externally regulated. The later type 16ACR with an integral block type connector is internally regulated. Sounds like you have replaced an early type with a later one. What year is your car? Do you have a red voltage regulator on the side wall inside the passenger glovebox? If so then you I would suspect you had an early 11AC type alternator fitted. It's not a straight swap for the later type but it can be done with some wiring mods. Does the charging system work ie does the battery light go out and does the ammeter sit in the +ve zone with the engine at fast idle? Lots of questions I know but more information would help with your problem.

As for the wipers and dash illumination, may just be coincidence.

Check the wires and connectors.

I changed the alternator on my mini the other week, took it for a run. The warning lamp went out but the wipers, blower and allsorts basically died. I found that when I was fitting the cables on the cable to the starter motor had fallen off due to corrosion.

The car is a 1973 V8s.

I was told by the company i bought it from that it was a straight swap and that is hould just tape over the spade connector that was connected to the old alternator as the new one had been modified. It was working fine when i first used it although the ammeter sits on 0 when idling.

Think i might have to take it to a garage to have the electrics checked over.

Hello Thomas,

Nothing wrong with that. The ammeter will show a positive charge when the battery having been discharged by a load placed upon it is if you like being recharged. The ammeter will show a discharge when the current being supplied is less than that being drawn from the battery. To sit on zero shows the system is in equilibrium,...(assuming that your ammeter has not failed).

Thanks for your advice Ron.

Like i say ... when i fitted it it was working fine ..... for a few hundred miles. Got another problem now...... when you turn the ignition you get a "clunk" then nothing happens. Turn the key back... try again and it starts first time. Cars eh!
