Keys - Where to get keys

Hi,

I have just acquired a May '64 2000 in City Grey / Buscuit. Though a bit shabby (understatement - see the next mag!) it's rarity meant I had to rescue it. However, there are no keys with it. (It still moved because the front calipers are off & the drive shafts have been cut through.....).

Security in the '60's wasn't quite what it is today & the key numbers are stamped on the chassis plate on the near side front door A-post. You know, FR... etc. Where can I get duplicates? I know I've seen various boards of British Keys at autojumbles, but don't remember who does them.

Hi Phil,

A good key cutting shop can get theses keys for you.

I know the Mr Minit chain are able to make duplicates or get the keys made to code.

They quoted me £15 ish for a pair of keys cut to code. You could trawl the jumbles but the key I have seen are not always new.

You can get a note of the lock numbers fitted on a heritage certificate but a point to note is that they may have been changed....

Oddly enough, I was in Timpsons in the town this morning getting a spare key cut for my Triumph (two wheels, you're probably not interested, although I have had a few 'classic' Triumphs in my time. My first car was a 1967 FWD 1300). I asked the geezer if he could get keys cut from code. He said twenty quid for a pair (two the same). When I explained that there were three keys and this could prove prohibitively expensive, he said he could probably do a deal!

I made a mistake and meant to say Timpsons.

If you want originality then it is a case of bite the bullet.

I have a selection of keys which are numbered and I have in the past recut a key to suit a lock when I didn't have the correct one and then got a copy at the local cutters for about £3 quid.

It is easier for the Glove box, petrol cap and boot locks as these are very common patterns.

You can do this your self if the Key cutter will sell you a Blank for about £2-3 although some are funny about it and refuse.

I am happy to have keys cut at cost if I have an original one or would consider making one from the lock.

I think Phil would only have door, boot and ignition lock but no glove box or petrol cap locks unless retro fitted??

Thanks for the advice guys,

Arthuy is quite right - the car has no filler lock or glove box lock.

By the way; I have found that the grille badge has a stainless steel surround in place of the later version of all-in-one plastic. Also, a spare badge in the boot is like the later badges but has no cut-out at the top for the extra clearance for the bonnet release catch. Therefore 3 types & counting......was the series 1 V8 a different one aswell?

Another point to mention is the wood veneered door cappings. James Taylor's excellent book suggests these ceased at a few hundred cars. Mine is no. 3607. The cappings are all veneer on what appears to be aluminium, & apart from the varnish they are in good nick!
