Interesting SD1 alloy wheel on ebay

Just had a thought, as you may be aware I also have a VW beetle, now if you want to fit different alloys to a beetle, you simply buy drums and disks with a different PCD (5x130 porsche for example) If you wanted something out of the ordinary you can buy undrilled disks and drums and have them drilled by an engineering shop (I have seen a VW T3 fastback locally with volvo 850 T5 alloys fitted).
Now, and this is the point of this post, if you could find a set of alloys that you liked, with the correct offset, I am sure that it would be possible to have the hubs on your rover re-drilled with the correct PCD, hey presto any alloy wheels you like on your car, I dont know why I didn't think of this before Its been going on for years in the Beetle world.

I know well, try finding a undrilled set of p6 hubs :p
apart from that its a good point, not only vee dubs but us in custom world have been doing it for years as well. main problem is cost, if you know of a good machine shop that will do the work at a good price let us know as I think they will get inundated with work :D
Fuch alloys on a p6 anyone mr webmaster? :blues:

No It was the singular wheel I was talking about, I have searched the interweb for more info on these wheels, but have come up with nothing, were they specially made for the police? does anyone have any further information?
Cheers

I've seen similar style wheels on another vehicle, but I can't remember what it was at the moment. These wheels were painted black with the edges of the square holes left shiny.

I had another look, I thin Ralph has a good point, I seem to remember something similar as well, think it may have been a MK1 escort rally car, or maybe even a VW of some type.

Oh dear, not quite a match although I wonder with it being so close (1.5mm out each side) they could be machined slightly to fit ?

Richard

I think the danger with that is either the studs would bend or the wheel would bolt up off centre and cause a bad vibration(at best)

You used to be able to get uni lug wheels for 5 spoke yanks(and other 5 spoke cars) I had a set on my couger. these had a slot rather than a hole for the studs to go through, so depending on the pcd of your car they would fit, and be centred, (Untill you boot the car across a road with a very high camber akin to a barrel in a rush to get home and take off due to 400 horses hitting the tarmac, land on other side of the road with a bang and bend the pitman arm so you can only do left turns as you have 1 wheel pointing left and 1 pointing straight)
but up untill then they worked very well

I guess that for that to work, the centre hole of the wheel would need to be a snug fit on the hub, to keep the wheel centered correctly.

Richard

I was intrigued by unilug wheels when I found tehm on ebay.com, I am sure if you tightened them correctly they would centre themselves, otherwise I doubt they would be on sale in the letigious US of A
