Halfshafts are the same both sides. I have one I could sell you but the shipping would be expensive due to the weight I would think.

Universal joints replacement is a pretty straightforward job. I know sometimes it feels like the easier option to just replace the whole driveshaft particularly as I need my car everyday but I would replace the UJs. Take your time and I'm sure you could manage. That way you end up with a known quantity when you're done. There's always plenty of help here if you get stuck too.

Added to which, replacing just the halfshaft without the entire hub means you'd need to replace the collapsible spacer which will cost another twenty quid or so.

Sounds as if I've always been over cautious then. What's the answer, to just torque up to a certain value?
It's more a question of "feel". Leaving it too loose will obviously cause problems, tightening it too tight will collapse the spacer further, which is not good either, so it needs to be just right, which bearing in mind the method for setting them up in the first place, and the wide variations possible in doing that, isn't a problem at all.

Thanks for that Harvey, it should save me a few quid from now on. I like things that can be set by feel.

You will only really need a new half shaft and / or yoke shaft if your uni joints have reached the point where they have seized and have been rotating within the shaft. The ensuing damage will often mean that a new uni joint won't fit as it should, so the only real option is replacement.
