gubbed auto box... - in V8

it all started on on 31st dec
squeeking noise from car all the time.
Have experiecened a few moments at roundabouts before - accellerate to pull away and no movment then off we go
now its started to appear to have slipping clutch when on the move and down on power a bit?
stall speed is around 2000 rpm, but car rev counter only.
Any ideas (oil is ok. plenty off it)
kick down can produce "sliping clutch syndrome"
might get it out on road tomorrow
Grearbox fair clunkes into grear - much more severe than on 2000sc. (this is a V8)
 
Sounds bad.
This will sound silly but check that the engine is not actually starving of fuel at times. I have had a similar problem in the past and it turned out to be a partially blocked fuel filter, causing loss of power and poor pickup.
Failing that it sounds as though the gearbox is well and truly on its way out, time to upgrade to 4 speeder perhaps? Sorry back on my favourite soapbox again!)
