when engine is cold and you select drive in my v8 there is sometimes a delay then it jumps into gear or going up there is a delay then jumps into gear it only happens when cold

If you're talking about less than a second, then that's normal when cold - If you're talking about more than 2 seconds than that's not normal. Please elucidate.
