Galvanizing Opinions - Rustproof panels anyone

Hi All,
Is it possible to galvanise P6 panels? I am sure I read somewhere that the process could distort panels, anyone got any comments/theories
Cheers

I thought about this and was told that the paint wouldn't stick.

If it is rust proofing what about electro plating?

Colin

You could use a Zinc Galvanising Spray - available in aerosol cans - quite expensive but has worked extremely well on my door bottoms which were badly thinnned with rust. Due to the high zinc content of these sprays , the electrochemical protection is extremely effective and long lasting. As no heat is involved it wont distort the panels - but it will only work if applied to bare metal.

There are specialist galvanised surface etch primers available, I found This One its a water based paint as well!
As for the actual process of Galvanising, I have spoken to a local hot galvaniser and they said it would be almost impossible to do a car panel without distortion

I am now looking into electro plating (thanks arthuy) will let you know
Cheers

I think one of the problems you'll find with electroplating is that the plating tends to be thin on the indside of curves. I believe this is because there needs to be a 'line of sight' from the electrode to the surface being plated.

Hey, electro plate it with gold.... That would be seriously impressive, if rather expensive !

Many modern cars are galvanised from the factory, interesting to find out how they combat the distortion factor.

Oh, and I believe Ian has found the best way to prevent rust on your P6, move to California !!

Is there anyone who knows about ships?

I seem to remember from school that the attach piece of metal of a different kind to the hull some where and because of the current flow the piece you attach gets rusted but the hull doesn't.

Can't remeber exactly what is was called and if it only worked in salt water, anyone?

Colin

Sacraficial anode! Stick it in google and read on.

There have been various adverts in the trade press advertising systems for use on cars.

hi,
only thing i know about ships is they have been fetching me some rust free NADA cars back from california. pictuers will be on my NEW website shortly.

As part of the research for my overhaul (now underway) I asked a chap who was very serious about paint - Astons Ferraris etc to concours +. Basic message was galvanising is great if your panels are perfectly clean and rust free; otherwise forget it cos you just seal in the rot for later surprises! He recommended a chemical strip in an ultrasonic bath, followed by a wash down with phosphoric acid immediately before treating with a good quality two pack zinc oxide primer. Thats what we're doing so I'll let you know in 20 years time whether it worked!
