I highly recommend draining the tank and removing the sender so as to be able to solder it on your workbench. I reckon trying to do it in situ would be an explosive experience! I'm sure you wouldn't do anything stupid! Apologies if that isn't the slightest bit helpful.

I was planning to remove the sender unit first ,I don't fancy trying to solder a leaky sender unit ,lying on my back with a hot soldering iron in my hand ,and petrol leaking out !!
