Fruity exhausts - rumble rumble

Anyone know where I can get hold of a more "characterful" rear exhaust box for my P6? I don't want to go silly and I still want to retain standardish looks but I want to liberate some of that V8 sound. Any help or pointing in the right direction greatly appreciated.

Robin,
a close friend of mine, SD1 nut and now sadly deceased, used to buy stainless, big-bore tail boxes from Rimmer Bros. and swore by them for throaty noise and extra power!
Maybe worth a chat with someone there.
Regards, John.

There was a picture of a customised P6 on this site a few days/weeks ago with a twin pipe rear box. Looked nice.
Assume you don't want a pipe the size young boys put on a 1 litre Corsa ?
Suppose you could take your rear box into somewhere like Kwik Fit and see if they have a rear box which would mate up with your pipework. A bit of welding and make up a rear support and Bob's your uncle

I suppose I have to reply to this one ! I found that a "Cherry Bomb" fits in nicely where the back silencer was, using the original piping. My "Cherry Bomb" came from a rally shop for £30 and was about the same length as the original silencer and had a 2" diameter tail pipe. I was able to re-use the mounting brackets off the original as they were on the pipes rather than silencer, so welded back onto the new pipe in their original positions. It all makes a nice mellow rumble thats doesnt annoy the neighbours, although they know its me ! :;):

I agree with Ron, thats exactly what I fitted to my 2.2tc, got mine from Larkspeed in leeds many years ago, helped to make the 4 pot sound more like the v8. Mine had a chromed tailpipe, but a friend bought one for his midget a few years later and they had a choice of chrome or stainless tailpipes.

Thanks for your help on this one guys, I'll have a noisy round and see what's about! I'd thought about a cherry bomb already but was a bit concerned about the volume but it sounds like it won't be too bad. Cheers again. :)

Update for you - having nothing better to do at work, I've tracked down Larkspeed (0113 284 0184). Got quoted £99 for a single 3" round tail pipe in mild steel or a double 3" stainless steel for £149 which seems pretty reasonable. These are Peco universal cheery bombs so should be of decent enough quality. Now, the only question that remains is do I tell the mrs or just hope she never notices ("it's always been this loud love")... :D

I fitted my 2.2tc with a stainless steel rear silencer and tailpipe. Gave it a lovely 'crisp' sound without being over the top.

Hi Robin,
Just tell your Mrs the old one had rusted through and was a health hazard, If you then go for the stainless one you are doing it for economic reasons as you will never have to replace it and it makes the car more re-saleable if you decide to sell.
Cheers
Al
