HI ALL.

AS BEAULIEA IS COMING UP!!! WHAT PART NUMBERS SHOULD I/WE BE LOOKING FOR, FOR,GIRLING,ARMSTRONG, ETC FRONT AND REAR DAMPERS/SHOCKS?? WHAT IS A REASONABLE PRICE FOR THEM?
I HAVE BEEN GIVEN A BOX OF "ROVER P6?" BITS BY A WIDOW,SHE SAYS SHE DOESNT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT CAR BITS,SO DO WHAT YOU LIKE WITH THEM. IN IT, ARE A PAIR OF, NOS, WHAT I THINK ARE P6 FRONT DAMPERS IN THEIR TATTY ARMSTRONG BOX.
THERE IS A FAINT NUMBER; 62?002? I THINK!!! IF ITS P6 WHATS THE NUMBER MEANT TO BE?

CHEERS ALL

OBVIOUSLY NOBODY KNOWS THE NUMBERS, OR WANTS TO LET ME KNOW!!!!!

I HAVE NOW FOUND OUT THEY ARE P6 FRONTS, WITH THE PROPER TAPERED BUSHES, SHE RANG ME,AS SHE FOUND ANOTHER BOX OF ASSORTED BITS,WITH 2 MORE PAIRS IN
I WILL USE ONE PAIR,KEEP A SPARE PAIR, AND SELL THE OTHER PAIR. LETS SEE WHAT ££s THEY GET!!

Can't say I'm surprised at the lack of response here. This seems to be a bit of a dark art.

In my V8 spares book there are THREE different front dampers listed ex factory - standard car, power steering car and police spec. I wonder if the 4 cyl cars yield any more part nos?

I've not yet met anybody who can tell me what the differences were (although I can speculate intelligently) and especially not anyone able to tell me the valving specs so that they could be reproduced.

Most suppliers seem to list only one spec of damper for the P6 fronts (if they list them at all!!).

And Koni have now discontinued and sold out their uprated ones.

All too difficult for a Sunday morning!

I don't know if what I'm about to post has been said before, if so I apologise but I'm to lazy to trawl back thru all the previous posts to find out.

P6 front dampers work differently to any other vehicle I can think of offhand. It follows then that although demand may be high among P6 owners, prices would be high if re manufactured.

Taking as a comparison say a Vauxhall Viva, car hits bump, damper is compressed, then on the rebound, damps on extension

P6 hits bump, damper is extended, then on rebound, damps on compression.

this is why it's not a good idea putting on dampers from other cars just because they fit.

HI ALL,
I knew they were different in that the valve was reversed, but was unaware that 3 different ones were listed!! police spec, I presume were in limited demand by us public, back then, so were probably limited to supply on demand,or special order items only, and are now rarer than gnats wotsits.
I expect, like many others, thought front dampers are the same for all the range, maybe a little stiffer on a 3500s!!!
now its a matter of get any proper front one you can, when you can,as cheap as you can....IF!!! you can!!!! ???

the ones I have got, are from the 80s and match the armstrong, and girling, catalogue numbers of the era, luckily,I found somebody with an old catalogue! they also have the correct tapered bushes without a metal insert!!

so for all you autojumble searching, digging, haggling, car nuts like me!!
the armstrong number is; 62-0025 listed for all years 63-76 2000/2200 models, but I would imagine will suit a v8 as well.

good hunting :p
