Fitting Rover P6 Pistons

Hello, I have aquired a set of Rover P6 high compression pistons to re-fit but i'm not sure which way around they should go on the rods. They are Hepolite branded and are stamped 'STD' and have the letter 'A' marked on the outer edge. Should the STD mark face the front of the engine or doesnt it matter which way around they go. Any help appreciated!!, thanks

Can the manufacturer not provide any assistance to you regarding the markings that adorn their pistons and the correct orientation?

Ron.

Thanks for the reply . As far as I know Hepolite went out of business a few years ago and I bought the pistons as new old stock

Hmm, well as far as I am aware, the original Rover pistons for the P6B were not orientation specific, although once fitted to the rods they are. Given that your pistons are not OEM, then rightly you cannot assume the same applies.

I see that you have also posted over at the V8 forum. Surely someone must have fitted them before. :?

I'd hazard a guess that STD means standard, i.e. not 20 thou oversize for example. Can you mic them up?

AFAIK there's no specific way that the pistons need to be fitted. The "A" would be the grade, which means, even if the "STD" wasn't there you would know it was standard bore size.
Chances are that Hepolite supplied the pistons to Rover at the time anyway.

Just make sure that they're not early type pistons, or you'll either need the early crank to go with them,(not good with the rope rear seal) or get the whole lot (pistons rods and crank) rebalanced. TBH if they were early type I wouldn't fit them anyway, the weaknesses in them were the reason they were upgraded.

Thanks for the replies much appreciated . How do I know if i have the early P6 pistons and why do they need to matched to the early crank and rods ??

The early pistons have a hole beneath the gudgeon pin, and are a different weight so are balanced to thier own specific crank type. The rods are the same, early or late. A picture of your pistons would help tell which type you have.

Thanks I can't see any holes under the gudgeon pins ..ill try to get a pic on here. I have them fitted to 2 of my old rods now and they seemed to go on okay
