Fitting progressive rear spring - question:

Hello all,
I have a question regarding the progressive rear springs I am fitting to my 1971 3500: Shall "the narrow spirals" be at the bottom or at the top? I would think at the bottom, but someone claimed the opposite to me, and that made me a bit uncertain. Please advice you cunning P6 experts.
regards, Barten.

In my humble opinion it does not make any difference at all.
But maybe there is something that i haven't thought of...

I can't think of any practical impact on the springing of either option. So if you have a preference on the visual appearance.... Actually there would be a very small theoretical advantage in reducing unsprung weight by keeping the tight coils nearest to the body and the wide spaced coils at the suspension arm end, but we really are picking nits here!

If you look at a valve spring that has close coils at one end, that end is always put closest to the head, so following the same theory with a rear P6 roadspring the closest coils should go at the top.

Barten,
I'll be going the progrssive spring route with my Lancia Delta Integrale next year and to answer your question, the "smaller" spring goes at the top. Give these people a call http://www.blackartdesigns.com/index.html . If you ask for John Stubbs (he's the owner & used to work for Leda suspension who went into liquidation last year) he'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks for all the replies. I can sum up by saying it doen not matter much, but preferably have the dense coils on the upper side, close to the body. I will fit them in 1 1/2" week when I'm back from the North Sea. I will report the possible improvement!
regards, Barten
