Estate Hatch Gas Struts - Do they ever work???

Anyi estate owners out there got any comment on the gas struts for the rear hatch? When my car was on the road it would never stay open on the gas struts that were fitted. I got some other sets from various different scrap yard cars but having just trial fitted the hatch with it's new hinges (Austin Healey 3000 sourced!) none of them seem like they will do much better than the originals.

However looking at the original struts there doesn't appear to be much wrong with them anyway. The problems seems to be that the hatch with the glass is just too heavy. Did they ever stay open unassisted???

I'm quite tempted to fit some thing like a bonnet stay that'll sit on a clip along the length of the hatch just under the window. At least it guaranteed to stay put. I had a couple of near misses unloading when the car was on the road and ended up carrying round an old broomstick which wasn't very elegant (and has probably long since found a new use since the restoration started!)

Mine never worked, despite replacing them, In the end a fitted a mechanical stay from a Volvo estate (I think) It was one of those that locked automatically, and then lift a bit more to release.

hi,
the one i had worked perfectly. so they must have been up to scratch for holding the bootlid up when new.

Thanks for the replies. Which model did you have Ian, the early one using the saloon bootlid hinges or the later one with external hinges?
