electric fuel pumps - which electric pump

Hi chaps,
i am thinking of replacing my mechanical fuel pump with a facet electric one. I have spotted some reasonably priced ones on ebay but just wandered if anyone had fitted one of these and how easy it was to change.

Would i be right in thinking the silver top pump would be adequate for 3500s the spec says it operates at 4-5psi, 18 gallons an hour and would be suitable for normal road use, there is a higher output red top pump but it says it is for racing use i am not planning on racing the old girl. I would rather ask you chaps for advice than the ebay seller i have come a cropper with advice from ebay sellers in the past.

any comments much appreciated !!

many thanks

Hi colin, I am thinking of fitting one aswell but i was going to purchase one from Wadhams. I just need to find out which carbs i have fitted to my car. I have never fitted one before but i cant be to difficult. Good luck.

Thanks for your post simon,

How is Wadhams for price on these electric pumps ?, on ebay they are around £65.00 + about £10 postage they are brand new and from a v8 specialist, Parts Range i think they call themselves may be a bit cheaper than Wadhams, you never know.

Regards Colin

I got my facet pump from Wins International, who regularly advertise in P6 News, same sort of price about £65 when I got mine. Not necessarily the cheapest, but he knows what he's talking about and quick delivery.
I did once make the mistake of visiting his store, its like an alladins cave of various odds and sods for Rovers, Stags, spitfires etc. Could easily have spent hundreds but used all my self control.

I did mention that I was thinking of fitting one of my spare P4 double-ender (Oooeer Missus!) SU's to our V8 a while back but didn't get any feedback.
Any views?

Electric fuel pumps are £59.50 from wadhams + postage. I will have a look on ebay and give winns a try as well. My mechanical one has let me down twice now so its got to go.

All the best.

It must be a good idea then......... :;):

EVENING EVERYONE<<<< after suffering the dreaded v8 vapour lock "AGAIN" embarrasing me at the T lights!!!! ???, I bought a good mini type electric pump at an autojumble for £10, I have fitted it to the pipeline between the main/res tap and manual pump and wired it into a choke switch fitted onto the reserve cable, so when you pull it out, 1.pump starts,2 the reserve tap opens with a full line of fuel. 3, bye bye vapour lock!!! any excess fuel is sent back into the tank so if your float valves are ok it should not flood!! I have driven the car at high "legal" motorway speeds with the pump on and off,and have noticed no problems at all. I am going to bypass the manual pump, and run it on electric only to see what it goes like, but at least ive got rid of the vapour lock!! I just turn the pump on when I get the "feeling its going to happen". I havent had my manual pump go wrong on me yet!! x fingers!! but Ive kept a spare in the boot for 3yrs. :)

Hi Pilkie,

thats a clever little modification you have thought of, may be the answer to my problems. I have had constant trouble with my mech pump since i got the my v8 even though i have replaced the diafram and valves it still can cut it, cant go more than a few miles and it packs up so i have given up on it.

I am awaiting delivery of a new electric pump, i have not decided how to fit it yet i know there are have been a number of options discussed previously in this forum think i will take a look through before i decide, you mod sounds very tempting though !!

hi colin, that symptom you describe sounds excactly like one i had with a dolly sprint i had, it was a blockage, "sh#t and rusty deposits" in the main fuel line out of the tank!! severely restricting the free fuel flow and suction by the pump.if i left it a few mins, gravity would fill the pipework up just enough to give me a carbfull. if you have access to an airline, disconnect the pipe from the tank side of the pump, and put some air pressure through it, it should blow a good jetstream of bubbles into the fuel tank,it also could be a collapsed bit of rubber hose pipework!! if you have any on it, as mostly it is hard plastic and metal pipework. this relaxes with no suck, "then gravity will fill the pump/carb enough for a 200yd dash!!" and it collapses with suck!! worth a check though! also you should check the floats and needle valves are ok,and not closing the flow off too early, thus starving the engine. good hunting!! you could fit a slave tank to the fuel pump with a length of fuel hose! if that works ok,then its a blockage!!! just had another thought!!! check the fuel switch over tap is ok, as if it is jammed/siezed 1/2 way between main and reserve lines it could cause flow restriction!! let us know what it was!! :O :D

A Mini's pump might not be ideal to fit under a P6 bonnet . Being fitted in the boot of a Mini it's got little suction and a lot of blow ,What you want is more suck and less blow

Anyone tried a Facet pump 40105 -6-7 ranging between £28 and £32 from www.fuelsystem.co.uk ? Even I might cough up that sort of money

The solid state pump is only rated to about 130hp - while they will probably do the job when new and with clean filters- would possibly be better to go for a 467087-k for a bit of reserve capacity - anything over 5 psi with SU's and you risk flooding past the needle valves so you also need to add £20 for a regulator.
