de dion tube - changing the braking system

Hy,
As it looks like I will have to re new my shockers and springs, on account of the car looks like a speed boat. Is it possible, easily that is to, change the de dion tube as well, disposing of the Dunlop inboard braking syatem and replacing it with the Girling outboard system. Would I have to also change the front calipers or would I get away with not touching them. Is the servo the same ?? Or am I best leaving well alone and letting Quik Fit service the brakes lol. Regards Maltin

my personal opinion is dont let quickfit near them, they will probably want to run a mile anyway ! find a reasonably local person with p6 knoweledge as the back brakes can be a real pain if youve never done them before. As you also have the rarer older dunlop calipers, its not as easy to service or replace them and get pads, as it is the later girling ones.
shoulnt be a problem fitting the later girling calipers, you will likely have to change the discs and handbrake cable as well.
have a search of the forum!!
I am sure that Harveyp6 will be happy to pass on his experience on this one!!

Just to point out, both systems are inboard, all rear brakes on a P6 are inboard.
I seem to remember that the diff mountings for the two types are different forcing you to change the diff, not sure you need to change the de-dion or drive shafts though.

Very sound advice as far as kwik-fit or any of the fast fit operators is concerned. They will quite happily relieve you of vast amounts of cash, and leave you with a serious headache that will cost twice as much to put right. I made a good living for 20 plus years putting right their cock-ups.
As for the Dunlop to Girling conversion I've done those as well, and I'm sure I've posted details on here before. I always had a donor car available to provide parts for the conversion.
It's not nescessary to change the diff or de dion tube to do the conversion.

Hy, Thanks or the replies guys, I think i'll just leave it as it is then lol. Dunt know why I thought there were outboard brakes on a p6??? I must be losing it somewhere all my previous cars are merging into one. And yes your right about garages lol After achieving the status symbol of buying a new car and selling all my tools and things , and thinking
, i'll let the mechanics grovel around underneath now. After letting them service my car and heaping hundreds of pounds on them only to find out that after a breakdown and being towed in. To be told sorry mate you should service your car more often, I decided to buy some more tools and a set of overalls again. Regards Maltin

G' Day all
Not required to change the diff but the Dunlop system uses two bolts to hold the rear calipers to the diff case so the output seal covers need to be changed for the girling specific ones. The Girling system has the calipers pivoting on a tube sort of arrangement.
The Dunlops are identical to the ones used on the same period of Jags and Aston Martins, with power to pull up a "Supercar" from 140mph. With a bit of love and preventative maintanence they work very well indeed. I have had people complement me on the power of the brakes in my early 2000, only to be shocked when they find out that they are 43 years old!!!!
Pain to get bits for, thats all.......

Cheers

Guy
