Cranckshaft rear oil seal - Help!?

Any tips about changing the rear crankshaft oil seal greatly appreciated, as it looks like a pain in the A£$e in the manual.
I already have the gearbox and lutch out and it seems rude not to do it now!!

Presuming it's a rope seal:

To change it you really need to remove the crank. Whether this can be done while leaving the pistons and conrods in place I don't know. There is one other method using a device called a chinese finger which screws into the end of the rope seal and pulls it out. The same device is then used to pull the new seal into place. With this method only the rear main bearing cap needs to be removed and the job can be completed with the engine in the car.

The rope seals tend to leak especially if allowed to dry out while the car stands for long periods of time. Leak can be exagerated by problems with the breather system though.

Just a thought! If it were leaking would I not have oil all over the back of the flywheel? It seems suprisingly dry in there. I wonder whether the back of the sump is leaking and the clutch was just knackered causing it to slip? Any thoughts before I start to bolt it back together in the hope that this is right.

My rope seal engine was p*****g oil out but when I took it out it was pretty dry. The oil will tend to be flung off the fly wheel.

Mine isn`t the rope seal type. it`s the later lip seal thing. I think I`ll do a naughty thing and stick the flywheel back on and run the engine gearbox less to see for sure if it is leaking or not. I really hope its not!. I`ll just have to remember not to stick my fingers in between the flywheel and the starter!!

I think with the later lip seal it's very easy to replace. You can pull them out with some self tapping screws and then push the new one into place with the crank and main bearing cap in place. I'd confirm this by examination before you destroy the seal though. Not sure whether you'll be able to tell if it's leaking or not by running up like that as it may only be evident when a bit pressure builds up in the crankcase under load.

Heh heh. have run it up, no leak. bolted everything together put my SD1 gearbox in. put the old four speed box in the lock up. I am pretty certain that it was the old gearbox leaking like a sieve that was the problem, if the oil slick underneath it after a few days sitting there is anything to go by. Hurrah!!

Cheers for your help though!!
