clock problems (again!!)

Can anyone tell me why my clock in my series 2 SC sounds like a machine gun? it's working but whenever it self winds it get's a bit too enthusiastic and seems to be overwinding (maybe?) I've had it apart but just to give everything a little clean to see if it improved matters, it didn't. Incidentally I didn't oil it, I know that causes problems with clocks, just a little detail brush out and a bit of gentle blowing out too.

I don't know why it does it but I seem to recall something similar some years ago with the clock on my series 2 but this was about 10 years ago. I left it as I was busy but unfortunately the clock packed up all together after a few months of making the noise. This is just to make you happy! I replaced it with a second hand one that worked. Trouble is they are more expensive now!

Strange thing is when you try it on the bench with a battery it doesn't do it, think I may get the meter on the car's own battery. wonder if it's a low current problem? car get's used every day but the starter may be turning very slightly slower, hard to say. It puts me in mind of a relay not being able to switch correctly due to flat battery.
Will check at battery and at wiring to the clock tomorrow, I would prefer mine not to pack up completely, as you rightly say they aint so cheap these days, and it's driving me nuts clattering away.
