Changing dampers - How...

I´m going to change the rear dampers on my -73 P6B, but I can´t see how I can remove them from within the spring (as described in the Haynes-manual). Do I need to pull the springs together or even remove them to make room for the swap?

Changing rear shocks is very simple actually. All you need to do is jack the car under the crossmember at the rear(not under the suspension arm).Lift out the complete rear seat and there is the top shock nut under there.Under the suspension arm the shock is held on with a plate which is held on with four bolts.Simply undo that, make sure you've got the car high enough and it should just drop out.Replacement is the opposite as per the famous Haynes manual quote. And you don't even need to disconnect the battery :p :p

Paxe, a word of warning before you do this the way P6MAD has suggested. If you support the car on the crossmember the suspension will hang down. Then when you remove the top damper mounting the force of the roadspring will force the lower link downwards. If you have an assistant down there with his head next to the lower link, now's the time to phone him an ambulance!
Far better to run the rear up on to ramps, then just drop the damper out.
If you want to do it by jacking, remove the top damper mount BEFORE you jack up the car. You will then need to support the car on stands so you can jack up the bottom link to fit the new damper. The damper will not be long enough with the suspension all the way down.

Thanks Harvey.Forgot to mention i did use a jack under the arm to stop the spring/arm falling too far down :D
