Carpet Mushrooms - where did the water come from ?

My regular car has been unreliable at the moment, so I have been forced to bring Ron out of his winter slumber (good job have not got round too taking the wings off).

Anyway this has seen Ron out boating in all the heavy rain. This morning I noticed mushrooms in the passenger footwell !. On investigation the carpets are soaked through. I cannot see any holes in the floor/bulkhead, and the dashpanel above seems dry, so where is the water coming from ??. The main area is in the footwell about 1/2m in front of the seats.

Help from anybody with similar experiences would be appreciated.

You sure ALL the holes in the lower bulkhead have grommets in them?

Alternatively this could be coming from the door seal and flowing down the door and then in. Borrow the talcum powder, take out the carpet, dust the floor & inner sill and then spray the door seal area with a watering can - you might see a track that you can trace back.

Then again you could try making some mushroom soup....

I had the same problem some years ago & traced it to holes in the windscreen pillar .......after a lot of head scratching.

The stainless trim has 3 rivets in the flat section that the door frame closes to, & these act as traps for water/crud running down from the roof gutters. Eventually they rot through in a dramatic fashion. A pain to get to & weld a piece in, so check Pete's suggestions first. Mine's been spot on ever since though.

Check the door is making a good seal.

I found that water runs on to the top of the door frame and dribbles in past the seal. Also helps if the gutters haven't rusted.

is the water only getting to the front? what about the rear?

My rear window seal went, and water dripped down the back seat, ran down the sides and made a nice pool in the front foot wells (and under the back seats).

Is there nowhere these things dont let water in?!?!

Thanks for the replies, I will investigate at the weekend.
Pete, is it best to leave the wifes Lavender scented talk alone ?

Another question, there's a big rigid foam "wedge" up against the bulkhead, looks like its acts as a footrest. The carpet fits over it OK and it looks "factory". Never heard this mentioned before, has everyone got one ?
