BW 35 - upchange "thump"

I have a 2200SC auto - generally it is quite smooth but when keeping up with stop/start traffic there is sometimes a thump on lifting-off after accelerating e.g. when trying to move into a space/joining a roundabout etc. What causes this?

This might not be the box but the UJ's in the propshaft. Bad wear in these can give a 'clonk' on take up or power off. They can be a pain to change but they are available. - If you wish to practice you could always do the front one on my V8! :D

Mark,
I sometimes get a thump on accelerating and it's usually because I've run over a Fiesta or Vectra or something similar.
They usually get spat out behind me with only a look of bewilderment on their faces.
I know that Peter understands this phenonenom (I wish that I could spell that)
Regards, John.

On the subject of thumps... I sometimes get a hefty kick in the kidneys when I put my V8 auto into gear. Someone once mention "short clutch pistons - ignore it, it's natural". Is this the case or am I in danger of spitting the gearbox into the street?

It could be that you have the idling speed a little too high - try lowering it a bit ( 700 rpm or thereabouts at idle). However if your engine is worn then it may not stay running at this low a rev rate.
Other than that it could be that you have wear in the box itself (clutches) - a fast indication is the colour of the ATF, Red is OK but brown means trouble!

Pete.

P.S. - Regarding pain in the left kidney when bootin' it.....try leaving the wife / girlfriend / totty at home as they tend not to like it when they experience four 'G' at take off and the 'lippy' skids across the face!
Oh God am I in trouble now........

P.P.S. Who took the picture of me Twocking the BRM then....have Gaydon missed it yet???

Cheers Pete (although I'm sure if I got the wife, girlfriend and totty in the car at the same time my pain would be very short lived!)
