'BRAKE' light not working

Now then! I located the problem at the weekend. A nice simple one as well - it would appear that the nearside sensor plug was not pushed into the socket on the base unit properly. After jacking the car up and supporting it I gave the plug a little squirt of Servisol and pushed it fimrly home. The BRAKE light now comes on when the handbrake is up.

Should I feel some disappointment or just relief that this was a simple fix???

Thank you all for your helpful advice. As advised by Dave Herns, I removed the gearshift knob in accordance with the Rover manual but when I got to the stage where you "ease the console up over the gearshift and handbrake and remove" it was clear that the handbrake rubber boot would not permit this and there was a strong risk of breaking the console which is only made of plastic. However I had limited access to the brake light switch and it is working OK. Trying to trace the wiring is almost impossible. Rover applied so much insulation and heavy carpet that you would have to tear it to pieces to get anywhere.
Thank you rp61973 for your offer of a replacement knob. I prefer to keep my own knob as it has given good service over the years and performs the two functions for which it is intended.

He he! No problem Classicus. In all seriousness, I have found that, ahem, a lubricant made by Durex has a secondary use in that it is great for easing the rubber boots over the handbrake/gear lever when removing the console. Try this dry and you are likely to destroy the boots and break the plastic console. With just a few well placed drops of the clear odourless lubricant over where the boots will slide works miracles. They just slide straight off and back on again with little or no resistance!

I will add that my partner gets this stuff as free samples from the pharmacy where she works. Ahem.

Thank you rp61973 for your helpful advice. You say that the product you describe may be used but it is a " secondary " use. What is its primary use?
I may have to wait some time before I read your reply but my PC is dying as we speak ( after giving 9 years satisfactory service) . I can buy a new one for the same price as I paid 9 years ago but it is going into a different world.
If P6s can last 35 years why cant computers?
