Borg-Warner 65 gearbox - SD!/P6 convertible?

This question may have been asked before, but is it possible to transfer a healthy B-W 65 from a SD1 to a P6? I have just "raped" a SD1 Rover and removed the gearbox. I've noticed that there's a sligt difference in size, as the SD1 is a bit shorter (10 cm) at the rear than the B-W 65 on the P6. How do I solve this problem? Longer shaft? or can the rear part on the P6 B-W be "transplanted" to the SD1 gearbox? Any hints/advice will be greatly appreciated. Chris Varming

Hi
I have done this twice and it is an easy job. But the original box on my car was a BW35. I used the original prop shaft and also used the original montings on the car. If the car has a BW65 it is a straight job to change the rearpartof the box. If you have the Haynes manuals for both cars you can see how it looks on the different boxes.

Yes it is possible. I bought a BW65 box off Ebay. The buyer said it was a P6 box, but the tail extension and flange were totally different as it was a SD1 box. Swap the tail extension housing and flange from the old box and you'll be alright. In the event, although the Ebay box fitted ok it was duff and I ended up refitting the original box, but that's a different story.

Whilst the box is out, change the mounting rubbers. Mine looked ok, but under load they aren't and the box flails against the exhaust when accelerating. I've now got to go through the hassle of changing them on the car - it would have been much easier on the bench!

It's also useful to know that the basic BW65 box is common to other car marques (eg Jaguar), so you aren't limited to Rover suppliers when it comes to spare bits such as gaskets. You'll need one to fit the extension housing!

Thanks Blueman and Mike, I'll do the operation as soon as I have got the gasket for the extension housing and I'll fit the rubber mountings as well, thanks for the hint. Chris+

Gentlemen, what seemed to be "a piece of cake" is now a katastrofee. The rear extension housing from the P6 fitted exactly, the gasket got sealed and everything was as it should be BUT: the speedometer drive component does not work as the drivewheel does not engange.. any comments, suggestions?? Aha!! - problem perhaps solved, because when I cleaned the SD1 gearbox it turned out to be a BW66 - can that be the explanation?? The drivewheel has a diameter (internal) of 30 mm and the P6 only 28. Chris++

Hi
I guess that could be the answer. I have not found anything else that could explain why it should not work.
The SD1 used BW66 after having used BW65 the first years.
