Auto/manual - Can I

I have just started Classic Car rallying with a 3500 and would welome any advice on the following.
When (as I suspect I will ) I blow the Auto box to pieces is it straight forward to replace it with a manual
The brakes are absolutely useless. New Master,new slave and all checked over but used in anger the pedal simply gives up and lies dormant on the floor. Makes driving interesting but no good for competiveness.
Apart from this,WHAT A BRILLIANT CAR!!

I am sure that the five speed conversion is so popular (common!) that many members will help out with the fine details.
Regarding brakes - Fit new hydraulic hoses (or aircraft spec) and harder linings - There are racers and rallyists who can help out on the finer points.
