Antifreeze in my engine - and anything else

Hi all

I registered 2 topics a few days ago and am made up with the quality of replies so what the hell, here is something else I need to know.

I have read articles about the need for year round antifreeze in the engine - when and how often should I check this - I will be driving between 3-4000 miles pa in my 3500S.

Also, apart from checking the engine oil level and the oil level in my SU carbs regularly, is there anything else I should be doing? I intend having the car serviced by my local P6 garage (JP Restorations) but how often should I do this?

Sorry but I love driving the car and even washing and waxing it but have never had much know how as to how to look after them outside of this!

Thanks

Hi there Rikkk, Yeah run antifreeze all the time, and a lot of it! Because the block is alloy, standard water will eat thru it and make one heck of a mess.

My Rover mentor showed me a block from a car which had been run without antifreeze and it was stuffed.

I run at least a 50% mix in my v8, and carry a litre or so in the boot for emergencies as well!

As for routine maintenance, I've got platinum plugs and electronic ignition so all I do is top up the Antifreeze, Oil, Transmission Oil and ..... oh yeah lots of petrol :)

Enjoy your baby, I've had mine in daily use for 2 years now and still get a smile when I hop in her!

Hi Rickkk,

I have used neat undiluted antifreeze in my engine since 1990, and I have driven about 90,000 miles in the car since then. I change the anti-freeze yearly. The coolant is always clean and rarely needs topping up, in contrast to 1986 to 1990 period when I used a water/antifreeze mix of about 3:1.

My Rover mechanic (Chris George of TS motors) who is an ex Rover main dealer senior mechanic and highly experienced on P6's and older told me one third antifereeze is all you should use. Using pure is in my view crazy. It may not freeze and may inhibit rust but pure antifreeze will not keep it as cool as a proper mixture in my view.

I'd recommend 30-50% all year round, changed every two years. It'll still not freeze after 2 years (at least glycol won't) but the corrosion inhibitors will be getting low by then.
