5 speed speedo cable?

The inner Speedo cable on my P6 has broken,I am having difficulty accessing the gearbox end of the cable I have removed the clamp and freed the outer cable but just can't get at the cable as I think part of the inner cable is still in it,
Is lowering the box the only option? if so what are the key point I need to watch?
Also which replacment cable do I need?

Im not 100% clear from your question.

However in my case I have a 5speed SD1 box fitted. My speedo cable is the standard 4 speed cable for the P6 V8

The gearbox end is a bit fiddly - but with use of a pit I didnt have any real problems. Certainly lowering the box was not required
