3500S sun visors

The sun visors on my 1972 3500S are in need of replacement/refurbishment. I was thinking about trying to open them up and put some new card/stiff foam in them but I'm not sure how easy this would be. Does anyone have any experience of doing this? Also my driver's side sun visor is too short.....ie it doesn't reach the mirror slot which seems kinda bizarre. The mirror is the small wide angle view type. The internal gubbins (whatever it is) of the sun visor seems to have disintegrated to the point where the sun visor has been reduced to merely a bag of stuff hanging from the roof fitting. I have seen these on eBay and wondered if the sun visors are a universal one size fits all? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....Category=27382&_trkparms=algo=LVI&its=I&otn=1

Any advice or experience would be greatly received................alternatively if anyone has a set going spare or can point me in a reliable direction........

cheers

Dave

Hi Dave.
Just to let you know that I bought the set of 4 bronze door cards from this guy and was extreemly pleased with their condition!!
There are a couple of sizes of visor, and fitment on the mirror, but the bit that attaches to the mirror end can be teazed out a bit if it doesnt reach!
At £10 the pair!!! I would grab these at that price,if they are in as good condition as the parts I bought!
" I have a spare set in stock already so I dont need any"!
Drop him a line first and make sure the vanity mirror is in good nick!
He is open to doing a deal! I got a useful part for my TR6 thrown in for free!! :D
If they dont sell, then when you get a reply, offer him £7.50 inc p/p for them via chq!!

I've a spare set free to good home but to be honest, they only sound a little better then your orignal's you're describing. A set of temps?

There are four types of sun visor, two of which you are most unlikely to see. Of the common types there is a long one fo all early cars and a short one for those cars with the knock off type rear view mirror. The latter can be fitted to earlier cars but you will also need the flat plate with an extension each side that carries the rubber clips that the visors land into. It simply screws behind the mirror mount and the screw spacings are common to both early and late types.

Visor type 3 is for OZ cars and is much more substantial than the UK ones although visually identical. Type 4 is unique to VIP's and is more substantial and in an attractive nutmeg brown.

There are also three types of mirror stem. On early cars up to around late '65 the mirror stem incorporates a reading lamp. This is very rare and desirable, but the actual lamp unit is prone to brittle burn up and is impossible to replace. Late cars have the knock off stem and always come with a wide flat black mirror. This was possible because by this time all cars had door mirrors. The mirror type you describe is covex and gives a degree of view out of the rear side windows so that you didn't have to have door or wing mirrors. An option available with wing or door mirrors only was a Lucas chrome backed flat dipping mirror.

Excellent advice as always. My mirror is this type:

Fraser, I should have known you would have some spares :)

Chris, thanks for the comprehensive reply.

Think I'll go with Pilkies' suggestion and see where I get.

There is now another set on ebay which sound like the long ones Chris mentioned http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=290322478803 Price is a bit steep but these look in v good condition.

Cheers

Hi Dave,

I had the same time type of convex mirror originally...found it a bit disconcerting TBH. Following traffic looked a bit further away than it really was!

I picked up a Wingard mirror from ebay for a fiver, and hermione kindly let me have a spare mounting of his for it. (Cheers mate!)

I've got a pair of smoked perspex visors..I like 'em because you can see through them when they're down but still stop the dazzle. I'm told they're from a P4...wouldn't swear to it though!

(Apologies for the pic quality!)

Cheers,

Yes, P4 or early P5. We have them in our 110 & I like them too. Did they fit in the original screwholes? I have a spare pair (from our deceased MK1a 3 litre) which I've not offered up for size but which I could fit to one our cars.

Due to the fact I fitted a complete roof with webasto, the interior light went to the rear,so I fitted an early chrome stemmed chrome lucas dipping mirror with the rare light fitting to illuminate the dash area.
I had various visors from S2 cars I had broken,so found the 2 best fitting and condition ones!

I used the original arms and persuaded the visors onto them with the help of a little candle wax. Wouldn't go back to the padded ones now.

Very dangerous if you have an accident and head-but the edge of a perspex visor. I suspect that is why they were discontinued

Yes, it was U.S safety legislation that led to the padded items I believe. As for the danger, I can't say I worry too much about it as they're normally fully up or fully down so wouldn't be at the top of the list of things to damage you in an impact, especially if you're wearing a seat belt, though our 110 has none fitted.

I know people who insist on having the sun visor at the midway position. However we do have air bags and seat belts to keep us safe these days
