3500s box, how noisy?

I have never driven a 3500S but I have been for a ride in one. Are the gearboxes noisy owing to their design or would they be quiter if they only had to cope with a lower powered 4 cylinder engine? Were they a poor quality gearbox to start with?

Ron.

The all aluminium construction means you hear the noise more, and the big bellhousing acts to amplify the sound I would think, and as they were a development of the 4 cylinder box they were never up to the job behind the V8.

The Rover box was a very quick get out of jail development after the cancellation of the 3500EI/3500S(Lucas Injection) which had a five speed ZF box.

What would that be worth
Difficult one that - the answer is whatever somebody will pay i guess. I suppose a good rule of thumb would be to check the price of secondhand ones and then increase it? Also if it's 30 year old NOS will it need seals etc changing???

Rich

I started a thread about it last year... So my synchro ring theory was indeed an educated guess. Oof. Anyway, the guy's making noises in the region of £400 for the diff, which makes it silly if it needs seals after 30+ years of storage. I might make him an offer for half that.

Good to see I gave you the same answer now as when you first posted the question on your other thread, and the pic in that thread makes me think I was right both times.

Those are the breaks Dave! :( . Still, considering the performance on the run up to the competition we should be happy to have gotten out of the pool stages! Well done to Wales, and to Philippe for getting the MOT!
Regards,
Dave
