All this week in Aldi (if you can get hold of one!) are Arc Welders at £34.99 a piece. 160A, and complete with a mask and a load of electrodes.

No experience of it myself, but if the other tools in Aldi are anything to by, it should be quality (everything is bulk-buy direct to the public at cost price. If anyone's done an MBA they'll know that how successful and effective Aldi's business model is - certainly not cheap tat!).
After a quick glance on t'internet, it seems to closely resemble the £77 160A welder from Machine Mart, albeit without the mask.

Probably worth a punt for change of £35 quid.....

Hi, back in the early 80s I remember paying £50 for a 130A stick welder, not a small
sum. At the time I was working for my mate in a workshop behind a machine shop.
I remember on one occasion he borrowed their MIG welder, which was a three piece
thing about the size of a fridge/freezer and had cost them £1500. Different times!

A genuine question, given that MIG welders can weld quite thick steel.
Does any one on here still use stick welders? And what for?

Although I've got an arc welder hiding somewhere, I've long preferred Mig, and that ALDI one seems to have a very high amperage rating at the bottom end for light work like car body repairs, from what I remember, which is not a lot.....

from what i remember their welders and compressors are rebranded 'wolf'.

the compressor i've got seems great for the money...

I bought an arc welder years ago when I first started welding, used it a couple of times, tried my mates MIG and promptly shelved the arc, they're next to useless for the type of work we do. Probably good for doing iron railings, big chunks of metal, that sort of thing, but you're in for a world of pain trying to do bodywork with one.

Years back I got one with a carbon arc brazing kit included, I thought "I'll have a go at this, see if it's easier than gas brazing" Stupid boy, I only used goggles, ended up with a swollen face like a raspberry lollipop with a racoon white band eye mask. Never again stick your stick welders

Last week I bought a jigsaw with variable speed , reciprocating action etc for £19.99 at Aldi
Can't really lose with a 3 year guarantee
Surprisingly Aldi's sandwiches are very tasty as well as cheap
