What happened in 1972? - anyone know?

I don't regret dumping the points - try Pertronix which fits inside the distributor so keeps the original look. Took a little time to solder in a live feed and bypass the resistor wire but well worth it in my opinion. They charge US cost but its sent from UK warehouse so about 50% saving on Uk...

cutting out - maybe a tune!

I would recommend getting a colourtune and airflow meter- was a bit dubious about the colourtune but it is a lot better than the lifting pin method which I never found to be very accurate, and a co meter is not much use with twin carbs, except to check that it will pass an MOT. Also worth...

Distributor - vacuum unit - Vacuum unit

Anybody got a spare vacuum unit or know where I can find one- managed to find one second hand for free but it has the same problem- big leak in the diaphragm. It a 1973 v8 HC engine. Not essential I know but might improve the mpg a little. Just fitted electronic points and its running very...

electric fuel pumps - which electric pump

The solid state pump is only rated to about 130hp - while they will probably do the job when new and with clean filters- would possibly be better to go for a 467087-k for a bit of reserve capacity - anything over 5 psi with SU's and you risk flooding past the needle valves so you also need to...

    V8 Front Caliper Pistons

Just fitted some- it looks like a chemical treatment like they use on gun barrels on stainless steel- probably going to last longer than chrome which tends to peel off.

    starting woes.

Just use a flat screwdriver blade with the handle taken off in a drill to prime the oil, before you replace the dizzy- works ok. Had to turn it over for about 2 minutes last time I rebuilt one.

    Unleaded fuel/valve seats

Looks like no need to panic about the lead as it has iron inserts, and I'll use an additive for now. It is running very nicely using high octane fuel. Probably not a good idea to run on plain unleaded, unless you have composite gaskets- likely to risk detonation which can blow your pistons to...

    Unleaded fuel/valve seats

Quite tricky trying to work out which of the snake oil treatments to use though I'll stick with Super Unleaded +Redex as the previous owner used it. I have heard using a mixture of additives is likely to make things worse. Anyway like you say probably best to wait until it actually needs a...

    Unleaded fuel/valve seats

Just considering my options- just got a P6 with 58k on a original compression 10.5:1 73 engine. Have some newer/unleaded heads but these are in poor condition and would need a lot of work. RPi do recondition the P5 heads at about £350 or should I use the newer ones? Seems to be running ok at the...

Thanks for your tips. Bit of a pain to get to but fortunately wiring was in place already. Next job is replacing the stereo which looks even harder to get at.
