Success! Finally got back to work on the car today. Relay swapped for a new one and that’s done the trick. Engine now switching off with the key. Thanks again to everyone for their suggestions, I learned a lot along the way! Cheers.

Tried that this afternoon and yes, pulling off the black wire from the relay stops the engine!! Any hints on what to do next gratefully received! Thank you.

Quick update. More still to do. Have cleaned hazard switch and flasher unit and also tried disconnecting flasher unit. No change but both benefited from a good clean with contact cleaner. Have attached a couple of photos following Bill‘s note showing the Lumenition set up. The white/yellow wire...

Hello Harvey. New alternator was a direct swap for the ACR one that was there. The old one had a date of 1992 so I don’t know which one was there before that; before my ownership. Car is an 1974 with an C chassis number. Ignition switch was brand new. Cheers.

A very long-overdue update. Finally had some time this week to follow up on this issue. New alternator (ACR) sourced from Wins and fitted, but sadly the engine still won’t switch off. If I press the brake pedal or put on the indicators, the engine stops, so I suspect there is some back feed...

Being stubborn, I stripped the new switch back out and mapped the terminals against the old one. The colours on the new Wadhams one are actually very close to the original, you just have to peer very closely! So have taped up the leads not being used (copied from the old switch) and reinstalled...

Hi - agree about the variations! It’s a 1974 3500S, chassis number 48200796C. The OE part number I bought was 586750. I’m thinking if I take the new switch back out again, I might be able to map the wires from the old switch, but the colours are not all the same. Might be easier just to order...

Hi Guys, much-delayed update on replacing the ignition switch. Managed to get a 7 wire replacement from Wadhams after confirming the old one had 7 wires. However, it seems the other end of the connector only has 4 wires. I suspect I’ve ordered the wrong switch, but thought I would ask the brains...
