    Ignition Switch won’t stop Engine

Success! Finally got back to work on the car today. Relay swapped for a new one and that’s done the trick. Engine now switching off with the key. Thanks again to everyone for their suggestions, I learned a lot along the way! Cheers.

    Ignition Switch won’t stop Engine

Agree, it’s a low cost option and the next step. I’m not going to be able to get back to the car for a while now but will report further on progress. Thanks again.

    Ignition Switch won’t stop Engine

Tried that this afternoon and yes, pulling off the black wire from the relay stops the engine!! Any hints on what to do next gratefully received! Thank you.

    Ignition Switch won’t stop Engine

Quick update. More still to do. Have cleaned hazard switch and flasher unit and also tried disconnecting flasher unit. No change but both benefited from a good clean with contact cleaner. Have attached a couple of photos following Bill‘s note showing the Lumenition set up. The white/yellow wire...

    Ignition Switch won’t stop Engine

Hi Bill, thanks for your comprehensive notes, much appreciated. I’ll try some of your suggestions over the next few days. I do have a manual and wiring diagram. I’ll check again, but I’m pretty sure the wire from the solenoid to the coil goes via a Bosch relay on my car. That could be a previous...

    Ignition Switch won’t stop Engine

Hello Harvey. New alternator was a direct swap for the ACR one that was there. The old one had a date of 1992 so I don’t know which one was there before that; before my ownership. Car is an 1974 with an C chassis number. Ignition switch was brand new. Cheers.

    Ignition Switch won’t stop Engine

A very long-overdue update. Finally had some time this week to follow up on this issue. New alternator (ACR) sourced from Wins and fitted, but sadly the engine still won’t switch off. If I press the brake pedal or put on the indicators, the engine stops, so I suspect there is some back feed...

    Neatening the boot lining

Looks good! I noticed tonight that Wadhams have a new replacement on their website, but postage to Aus will kill it.

    Neatening the boot lining

I have the same issue, but so far no solution. Have been trying to source some of the original trim clips for the side (thin) plastic, but also without success. I think there was a Rover Owners Club meeting in Sydney some time ago which featured a boot restoration, but unfortunately I was unable...

Thanks all, really appreciate the guidance as always. New alternator has been “on the list” for a while, so now might be the time! Cheers.

    Ignition Switch won’t stop Engine

Thanks Demetris, I’ll check that out. Lumenition system fitted long before my ownership. I’ll have a look next weekend and check out the starter wire. Thanks again.

    Ignition Switch won’t stop Engine

Hi Folks, hoping I can get your guidance on a weird issue with my 3500S. Car is running well, but when hot, the engine will not switch off with the ignition switch; it just keeps running until I press the brake pedal, then it stops. I recently replaced the ignition switch so it’s not that...

    Ignition switch replacement

Hi Richard. I recently replaced my ignition switch and finished up removing the steering column, it was less daunting than I thought and for me, made the switch replacement easier. I was struggling to get enough access otherwise. You don’t have to remove the shear bolts. I also managed to leave...

    Suspected Regulator Fault within 18ACR

Being stubborn, I stripped the new switch back out and mapped the terminals against the old one. The colours on the new Wadhams one are actually very close to the original, you just have to peer very closely! So have taped up the leads not being used (copied from the old switch) and reinstalled...

    Suspected Regulator Fault within 18ACR

Many thanks for that, that’s a huge help. I think I’ll just order another one with the right part. Wadhams have that in stock too; someone in the local club here might be able to use the version I bought. Thanks again. cheers

    Suspected Regulator Fault within 18ACR

Hi - agree about the variations! It’s a 1974 3500S, chassis number 48200796C. The OE part number I bought was 586750. I’m thinking if I take the new switch back out again, I might be able to map the wires from the old switch, but the colours are not all the same. Might be easier just to order...

    Suspected Regulator Fault within 18ACR

Hi Guys, much-delayed update on replacing the ignition switch. Managed to get a 7 wire replacement from Wadhams after confirming the old one had 7 wires. However, it seems the other end of the connector only has 4 wires. I suspect I’ve ordered the wrong switch, but thought I would ask the brains...

    Suspected Regulator Fault within 18ACR

Thanks again Guys for your help. First step to get a new switch and go from there. I’m heading to UK in three weeks so will bring one back and have a crack. There may be a delay with any update! cheers

    Suspected Regulator Fault within 18ACR

Ron, hoping I can pick your brains on alternators! My 3500s has an 18ACR fitted, when running around 1500rpm, voltage across the battery 14.7/14.8v, doesn’t drop too much when lights, heater etc switched on. Battery showing 12.6 volts with engine off. recently, the engine has begun to switch off...
