ZF 4HP22 step by step.

Seems to be a lot of confusion regarding the 22 and 24 boxes.

The ZF 4HP22 is cable operated ( throttle peddle input ) so Hydraulically operated gear shift via cable operated pressure input from your right foot.

Later variants from the likes of BMW introduced the " sport " mode selector switch, so when activated firmed up the shifts, this was a bit of a gimmick to add something new, but all it does is just firm up the shifts via activation of a solenoid which in turn gives you that firm shift.
This type is still a cable operated version, so the plug can be left redundant and it will work as per the standard "H" model with no side effects.

Variants of the 22 as fitted into later LR + RR models were the ZF 4HP22EH version.
These are ECU shift control so electro hydraulic operated via voltage signal. ( No cable )

The ZF 4HP24EH is a beefed up variant of the 22 and they are all electro hydraulic operated via ECU shift control via voltage signal.

Custom builders such as myself can build the
ZF 4HP24 H this is the beefed up variant of the 22 but hydraulically operated via cable input, so no ECU.
Various tail sections and output shafts can be utillised to increase or decrease the overall length to fit into all manner of projects.

"H" model control units can be used from different makes and models to suit whatever is required of the transmission itself, however for the larger engines the damper springs are increased in size and on times doubled up to cope with demands placed upon them.
Upgrades and modifications were introduced over the years of production to counter problems incurred throughout it's lifespan.
Some can be introduced into early units, some require a complete swap out, this also applies to the internal components of the transmission itself with individual items being upgraded to cope with the demands being placed upon them as well.
