'X' appeal!

Folks,
Driving home on a treacherous humpbacked bridge the other day a wheel trim flew off a F*rd F*cus coming the other way and hammered into the front of my 1973 2000SC. There is superficial damage to everything but the front number plate.

Has anyone out there got a number plate on a boot lid or similar lying around with a black letter 'X' in the plastic lettering used circa 1968-1978.

If I cannot locate said item (so far tried all the local scrapyards and numerous other places) I may be forced to put (technically non correct) black/silver plates on the car.

(No company now produces number plates in the old style - as of Jan. 1st 2003 all new plates must be to the new lettering standard, which would look completely daft on a P6)

Anyone finding said item would be truly 'X'-cellent make me 'X'-ceptionally happy.

Thanks
Nick

Thanks John,
I have tried all local scrapyards and there is not a hope. Found about four cars with the old style plates but none with an 'X'...

I live in Surrey, hence not many old cars to be found anywhere. The land of the people carrier.

Cheers

Thanks for that Simon, confirms what I've been thinking really. This is a worry for any P6 owner with a post circa 1970 car - it's now either get black and silver plates or new new style plates which look wrong on an old car. I'll have to make a few more enquiries.

Cheers

Just to add my experience of number plates.

I tried to get the raise digit yellow and white plates and there is unless you are sleeping with a number plate maker, will they make you these plates or sell the lettering.

I did get one guy (no I didn't sleep with him) to make the plates but 1) he made the plate the standard size 2) stuck the lettering on with double sided sticky tape and the letters fell off.

I do have a suggestion which I am looking at myself. Since you still have the plate the yellow backing you could get the letter replace by getting one of the silver letters and paint it or take off the silver paint. I think there is a guy on ebay who makes raise letter plates silver/black so an email to him would sort you out. Probably best not to sat it is for a post 1972 car you may find some one prepared to give you a letter.

There are folk who make "show Plates" or "signs" which they cannot legally sell as number plates but that is exactly what they are in any font you like. there is also guy's like this on ebay.

I have a result - thanks enormously Arthy for your input - that would have been the next option.

I got hold of my mate yesterday. I knew he had a big pile of bootlids but wasn't optimistic.

We unearthed about a dozen bootlids - most missing the number plates completely, but lo, at the bottom is the boot from a 1968 ex-factory car - an XC.

Yes it's a silver 'X' but an 'X' it is. Out with the gloss black spray later on today.

The day is saved, I have a wedding to do in a couple of weeks time and the old lady needs to look as good as possible.

Thanks folks
Nick
