I ve been into my classics a long time but managed to purchase one 6 years ago. Since I joined the world of classic cars I m amazed how many people confuse the joy of classic car ownership with greed.
I m really surprised how many people regard themselves as classic car enthusiast , when really they are just out for a quick buck, Or are dealers hiding under the name of enthusiast its a shame that theses people ruin the joy of owning classic cars.
I ve also been amazed by how many unpleasant classic car owners there are, mainly disrespectful of others cars or the fact that there not a V8 or not as they left the factory.
I like to think that we buy these cars (not just rovers all makes) not for there value or to be snobs , but for our enjoyment and others.
I just wonder how many of you have come across this or do I live I a different world.
At least this forum is a pleasant place to be.

I've come across one or 2 classic car snobs or know it all types in the past!
Mainly I just ignore them, but occasionally they leave the door wide open for a great come back put down line!
There are quite a few who while owning and enjoying a classic car,see them as a better investment than money in the bank or an isa!
There are those who like to keep cars factory, maybe with a few period options, and those who customise them to their own tastes, each to his or her own!
Once you know who they are they are easily avoided.

Well, if people are in it for a quick buck, then I'm doing something catastrophically wrong. I tend to aim to make the car better in my ownership and enjoy it.

The universal rule applies. There are arses in every walk of life, just walk away as there are too many of them to fight yourself.

Doesn't mean you can't express an opinion. I tend to find a good honest original car best most interesting because it tells a story of its years (even period bodges are fun if they don't compromise safety). Doesn't mean I can't admire someone's work to make a pristine polished example. If someone want's to customize a rot-box that would otherwise be scrap, then why not? Doesn't have to be your cup of tea, but they will need parts and services which help make cars more to your taste more viable into the future.

More P6s are good news in whatever form.

I have to agree with you but I probably don't do myself any favours - I am as prickly as a cactus and often take offence when people are merely asking polite questions about my cars.

After nearly 8 years of owning a P6, I can say that the driving is fun but I hate the shows and it is time to face the reality that they really aren't for me - I just upset myself and sometimes others around me.

I don't think I have ever owned a classic car and made money on resale, classic cars take looking after and making them the best you can be is part of ownership, I have come across some owners of more luxury marks a bit snobbish, best bunch I go to meets with is the north west kent morris minor club and the genuine people out number the one's trying to make money.

I've been involved with Veteran, Vintage and Classic cars since the late 1950's, and been a member of several historic car organisations. I do agree, there are people within the hobby that are fairly difficult to tolerate for various reasons, however, I must say that I have found most members of the Rover Car Club of Australia and the P4 Driver's Guild most welcoming and helpful. In general, the ratbags are the minority and as previously stated, can be avoided fairly easily. My wife and myself are really happy with taking up the Rover as a marque, and meeting like-minded enthusiasts.

I agree with what your on about--snobbery etc----I love taking the rat to rover meets ---people just walk past it---not realising mine is the most unique one there :D :D :D and probably fastest too :D :D without nitrous :D :D
have heard conversations like---ooh wrong bolts there or---thats the wrong shade of paint-----what is really comical is ----polish brigade shining there cars up like mad----still each to there own--as long as they're happy---mine gets washed when it rains   however it doesn't leak----so thats a bonus---I do get a better reception at custom/hotrod events though---makes a change to see something different is the main comment-so rover people are friendly---I didn't get lynched at shows ---I like looking at the p6 as no 2 are identical 100% of the time-in fact even on production line no 2 were the same--so point is --------Have fun and enjoy your p6 whether its immaculate/tatty/work in progress---

I have to say though that all of the comments I've had regarding the K series midget have been positive. The most annoying was a man who insisted I have a servo when I don't.

It does raise eyebrows at car shows though! Some people don't understand why.

I've not seen your Midget but I'd have thought a K-series and a servo under a Midget bonnet would take a Hell of a big shoehorn to achieve it!
Where did he think it was?

under the wiring near the wing!

I think he was the rubbery clutch cable cover thingy that stops cold air shooting up my leg.. But I was still slightly surprised...

You can fit one in, but on the other side from where he thought it was, tucked away over at the side. But there's not a lot of space... (link in my signature if you're interested)

I agree with others here. You'll find folks that annoy you anywhere. Snobbery comes out no matter where you are, I've seen it here even. At the same time I've met some wonderful people in the hobby over the years. Friendly, helpful and selfless.

You will find the chancers who think they can retire on classic car 'investments' but as we know fashion in the classic car world is fickle and it's not like stocks. You have to maintain and care for cars in a stable so costs go up without them getting more valuable in some cases. So, if that's their plan good for them. At the same time it's their lives. As long as it doesn't affect me (how can it?) what's the problem.

The folks who like to clean tailpipes with Q tips, if that's what makes them happy, good on them. If, however, they feel they are superior to folks like myself who enjoy modding cars gently or doing their own thing. Well, then I have a problem. I choose not to interact with them. If they are making themselves feel better at anothers cost (I'm their own eyes) and that is not the behavior of a decent human being in my opinion.

I've come across one person that I got he distinct impression that they were trying to create a cult around themselves. After they said something about another persons car never being a show winner because 'he doesn't have two nickels to rub together' I chose to keep my distance. He just made me uneasy in how he looked at other people.
