Hello everyone its been ages since ive been on here but ive come across a few problems with my wiper motor and washer pump they have both stopped working i was wonering if anyone had any 2nd hand cable driven wiper motors for a series 2 Rover 3500 what ive noticed is a spring has gone missing on the front of the motor called a return spring for breech block i wondered if this could be the cause of it not working as it stopped working suddenly or if anyone has any idea what else it could be also my washer pump has packed up can i get a halfords one to fit or if not does anyone have one for sale? its a Trico motor, pump and cap assembley in one

thanks

Martin

if you have the fusebox in the glovebox, check the fuse as the wiper motor has its own! have you checked the circuit on the washer with a bulb to see if it is live? Could also be the fuse!
Check the 2 sets of wiring contacts on the motor as well!
The spring is linked to the wiper delay mechanisms vacuum operated timer, and shouldnt affect the main function speeds, the spring shouldnt be that hard to replace, its only quite weak to aid the breech blocks return with an alternative suitable one from wherever you can find one! old washing machines, pop up toasters have lots of useful bits on them! :p
This type of wiper motor is only fitted to cars with power steering, but it should be a fairly std Leyland type! try to see what the numbers are on it,you can get recon motors for as little as £20 these days! Ive just got one from a resto show for £18 for my TR6 as a spare!

thanks a lot for that ill get to it as soon as it gets light tomorrow i have already checked the circuit with a multimeter and its reading fine and ive cleaned all the contacts with electrical contact spray, ill have a look at the fuses and ill start taking all the household appliances apart to find myself a spring :p so far with motors all ive come acorss have been very expensive do you have any idea where id get a recon motor?

thanks again
Martin

My 3500s has a cable system wiper motor and no PAS !

I suspect the actual motor is quite common , you just change the drive gears etc . Old type Minis etc ?

The missing spring might be the culprit if the motor thinks the wipers are parked .Try moving the block and see if the wipers work

The washer motor in the cap is , I believe , used on Stags .However rather than paying fancy prices I used a Halfords universal motor £9.99 and mounted it on a bracket near the bottle .You can keep and by pass the old motor if you want it to look authentic

To clarify. I should of said this wiper motor is the only one used on PAS cars!
The other type of wiper motor set up with acutating rods on V8's without PAS will not fit due to the PAS pump being in the way!
Dont want you buying the wrong one!!

Martin I hope by now you have sorted the wipers. My S has the rack & pinion type wiper gear with the vacuum delay mechanism, my delay mechanism electrical internals went u/s last year, manifesting itself with just the symptoms you described. Some weeks before this showed, I was lucky enough to find a "box of P6 odds and sods" on e.Bay, I was the only bidder....I got a lot for my £8 including a wiper motor with the vacuum switch attached ! Right place a right time for once in my life !!!

Question for the above knowledgable members: Can you still get the small bobbin mountings for the wiper motor (3 off) ?.
One of mine is just about severed and the other 2 are cracked. Would appreciate guidance. :;):

Martin. I forgot to say in above post. The wiper motor I gained looks ok but is untested. If you are having difficulties getting the problem sorted PM me and I will test this one, if its OK, for the price of postage its yours. Mike

Hi Guy's,

When my wiper motor bobbins fell apart, I rummaged through my toolbox at work, and found a set of Vauxhall Cavalier/Astra airbox mounting bobbins. Perfect!

Martin, I have tried to PM you regarding the wiper motor but each time my PM e.mail is returned to me undelivered.
Resume of my PM`s : Wiper motor I have is good mechanically, the Lucas motor brushes are badly worn but commutator is good. After freeing off brushes in their holders the motor tested out as OK with both slow and fast speeds working well - a good strong motor. The only downside is that it will need a set of (3) new carbon brushes in the VERY near future. Let me know your position as it is available if you need it FOC,in consideration of postage costs. Wt 1.8 Kg bare motor say 2kg packed for posting.

Mike J

I think you can use generic water pump for your truck. I had the same problem and I resorted into buying the generic ones online.

That's not correct, all the series 2 cars have the wiper motor on the passenger side, regardless of whether they have PAS or not.

Actually, you can find those in e-bay for a fairly affordable price. Another option if you want to avoid the hassle of searching for a cable driven wiper motor would be to seek DIYers assistance who can repair your wiper motor and washer pump in no time. Besides, it is so much practical to replace these with new parts. Just be sure to maintain them in order to make them last. Hope this is useful information. :)
