Wiper delay unit

Greetings all,

Please forgive me for what may be seen as a silly question, and I'm probably missing the bloomin' obvious. A NOS wiper delay unit is on the market for sale. however it is for LHD cars, and of course mine is RHD. In what way do the unit's differ ?

Thanks, Lewis

My parts book says 'early models 573034 RHD 573035 for 3500 451-454 and 3500S manual gearbox' then on next page 'for 3500S auto export 433, 466 573035'. Bit confusing, as its not clear what the difference may be. I bought one a while back and it fitted OK, but the small bit of foam on the air valve was dead, and I made a replacement which wasnt completely successful, until I smeared a bit of Vaseline on the seat, which made it work OK. Still have to replace the adjuster in the steering binnacle , so I now have a fixed delay that is good for most conditions.

Jp928, Yikes !, it looks like my wiper delay might remain by me manually operating the wiper switch. Mind you I see that you're from my neck of the woods. I live in regional Vic and just transgressing our deplorable roads puts a faulty wiper delay into perspective.

WHATS the problem exactly? Do a search here on wiper delay, you should find some help. Apart from bad contacts and the air valve there isnt much to go wrong.

Check the airline that runs from the steering binnacle to the delay unit. 50 yrs- could be cracked and letting vacuum escape.

If I may jump in here with a question about a malfunctioning delay ( 1972 3500): My wipers work normally, except when switched to the delay function. At that point, the wiper blades will rotate 90 degrees, from the horizontal to the perpendicular, and, then stop in that position. They will not advance or return to the horizontal (park) position. I have pulled the delay unit and inspected it. Could not find much wrong. The spring is in place, the bit of foam was missing, but, was replaced to no avail, and the airline that runs from the delay binnacle to the wiper unit is intact. Any ideas on how to pursue locating the problem are appreciated. I did try switching the leads on the delay unit. This led to no activation of the wiper blades, so, I returned the wires to the original positions. Thanks in advance.

If you do not purchase that delay, would you mind forwarding the information to me? I do have a Left Hand Steering 3500 and the delay is not functioning. Thank you.

Finfont - sounds to me like you have a wiper control from a P5, or even a P4. The P5s had a system where at turn off the wipers would do a different sweep so they rose up a ramp so that the rubber lifted completely off the screen.
On my NOS replacement the foam had died, and even when replaced with something home made the delay didnt work. to help seal the valve I put a smear of vaseline on the seat to help seal it, and this has worked with a fixed delay, as the control valve at the steering wheel binnacle has failed.

Edit - which spring do you say you have - the very light one on the outside of the case? It pulls the slide back , or one inside the delay unit?

I didn't realize that Rover fitted the P6 with parts from earlier models. Interesting. I'm going to have another look. Thank you for your input. Drew

Once upon a time the parts books used to indicate which parts were new and had never been used before - * in 2000 parts book.

Do the wipers park OK when you switch them off from setting 1 and 2 (not delay)? Meaning, can you switch off mid-wipe and the arms finish the cycle and settle where they should?

Hi Drew,
You will find it listed on the Rover Parts of London website. From recollection $187.00 AUD, half that in USD or GBP

No, the park function does not work. The wipers remain where they are when I turn them off.

My parts book lists the correct delay as # 573035. My car is a ‘72 3500 (vin 454) LHS made for export to Germany. The spring is external. I did replace that foam bit. Also, the park function for the wiper unit does not work. Could these two problems be related? Thank you for your time!
