Who's up for Das P6 Electric

Nice.... I suppose the easiest way would be get one of these zf gearboxes with an electric drive and Regen built in?

Mmmm no more petrol . Id have to install a RV8 sound effect . I only bought the car for its V8 sound !!

This has been an option for several years, a British company called PLM Flightlink developed a series of hub motors with built in regenerative braking, meaning you'd ditch the complete drivetrain. BMW built several minis with this, but other than physically mounting them on the suspension, wiring the control unit and balancing out the weight of the batteries, there is very little else to it, so it could be fitted to anything.

How does a 640bhp 4WD P6 sound? Apart from possibly lethal?

Yes that is the system I prefer as you can end up with less losses and allows 4WD, often thought of it, that approach with some computing power allows you individualy control each wheels RPM ie steering assist.

I always feel this is a bit of missed opportunity on some of today's hybrid cars as these usually work on supplementing the drivetrain. If they drove the other set of wheels you could have automatic 4 wheel drive implemented in software like the Mercedes 4-matic mechanical system. And that's pretty much ideal for road use as permanent 4WD is pretty pointless.

Perhaps it's not done due to the change in handling characteristics switching from one mode to another would entail?

I think it more of a failure to innovate by most if not all major car manufacturers who seem seem universally adverse to moving away from more traditional; systems.
To me the only possible negative is the addition of unsprung weight but I can think of ways around that. The advantages are huge! from inch by inch (cm by cm if you want) continuous control of individual wheels for ABS or Traction Control thru to directional stability and improved cornering let alone the regenerative and braking advantages.

But enough of the high tech stuff it would be great to get a P6 in electric even were it the same as the VW models shown. Battery technology and electric engine efficiency have provided great advances in the last 3 or 4 years and it will only get better.
I do like that ZF 8 speed tech but don't know if it is really necessary as electric engines are extremely flexible in there output RPM but I guess so long as there is an efficiency gain over the loses that an intermediary gearbox infers (and the extra weight) then its all good.

This is the best electric car conversion I've ever seen, would almost make me consider considering electric power :p

If the technology was there for long range compact battery packs then retrofitting should be an option, though I see that as very doubtful due to modern societies desire to throw stuff away the moment there is a 'better' replacement and not get the full usage.

Somewhere I'm sure I read an article of a large American car that was converted to battery power during the 70's, quite an interesting read if I could find it again?

A friend of mine has just put down a deposit on a tesla... It's a lot of money (I'd have bought half a house instead), but it's pretty breathtaking as a work of engineering. Especially when you consider the fast charging stations they're building for free at all the service stations... half an hour giving 170 mile range....

A friend of mine bought a Tesla last year, gave/sold his Nissan leaf to his brother. Now why didn't I get a job in Banking :(

I think the Tesla is pretty good but the best bit is it's really pushing the technology to become accessible to the masses which has always been the failing of electric cars.

I'd still want the business stuff fitted to a classic shell just because :D

Someone already has with a Saab 95

I do like the idea of it in a P6 though. Finding room for the batteries could be a bit of challenge though....
