Which flywheels and starters fit the 3.5

Greetings,
Been looking on ebay, etc, and need to know which flywheels and starters fit the old ( early su carb ) 3.5V8's. Some say 3.9 other say 4.0, etc. Just need to know accurately. Thanks.
 
Crank bolt spacing and starter motor position are all the same, so If you're not putting them inside a bellhousing, or fitting the engines to a particular box, then anything will fit and work, but I'd say the easiest and cheapest would be BW35/65 flexplates as fitted to P5B/P6B. If you must have flywheels then the most common would be Land/Range Rover as there are a lot more of those about than 3500S' & Manual SD1 V8's.
 
If you own a P6B then the number of starter motors that fit are limited by the location of the solenoid. Apart from the early Range Rovers, all later models won't fit as the solenoid will foul with the base unit / suspension.

Hi, be aware, Land/Range Rover flywheels are drilled for 10" clutch covers.

Well, there is plenty of space in the chassis I am using so thats no problem. However, I take it from the post above that all flywheels and all starters will fit - 3.5, 3.9. 4.0 4.2 4.3 4.4 4.6. 5.0. ??

And if that is so, all the starters will fit ??

Is the engine was fitted with an auto box, are the flex plates balanced ? and do they have enough weight to act as a flywheel without a torque converter attached to them ??
 
Got some photos of the engine numbers, will these tell me which cars they were originally fitted to ??

Difficult to say in their present condition, but you have at least 2, and possibly 3 different compression ratios, and two different types of carb, and two different exhaust manifolds just amongst what you have there.
 
Hi, OK, You are right, to a certain extent all flywheels and starters fit all engines because
their positions are fixed. As i said car flywheels are drilled for 9" and 9 1/2" clutch covers
(same PCD) Land/Range Rover flywheels are drilled for 10" clutch covers and can be heavier
because of their application. Looking at the starter from the front of the engine car starters
have the solenoid in the 6 o/clock position, 4x4 starters have it in the 9 o/clock position.

Flex plates are balanced and no they are not heavy enough without the torque converter.

2 seem to be 10.5 and 1 is 9.25 and 1 is 9.35. I also have extra carbs so can make them all the same, and a holley ( was part of the deal ) which I don't want - ebay time.
 
Many thanks for the info. My set up will be...... front engine with flywheel, ( no clutch needed, ) powering a rubber doughnut, connecting to the next (middle ) engines damper / pulley. I looked at the video of a chap thats used this way to connect 2 V8's.

The middle engine ( second engine ) will be the same, flywheel and doughnut connecting to the rear engine, which has the auto box. A short prop 12 -18 inches will power the diff.
 
Oooh!! That's a lot of power to put through the nose of the crank, especially the
third one. Even in standard trim that's 300BHP through the woodruff key. Look
forward to how you get on.

Although I've seen those rubber doughnuts perish at an alarming rate, I suppose the stresses on crank/s will be greatly reduced. Perhaps you could have the doughnuts made from polyurethane, or constant velocity?
 
My 2p worth. With the spare LT77 I bought (not good condition) I got a flywheel - 15.2Kg(33.5lb), and its clutch cover bolts are on 12" PCD. With the 3.9L 94 disco engine just bought I got a clutch cover - 12" PCD.
Question - am I ok planning to fit an SD1 clutch to the existing P6B flywheel? Do I need to wait until I know the bolt PCD on the P6B flywheel to order a clutch?

Thanks. Thats a sort of bugger, as it makes it hard to do a balance on the crank with flywheel and clutch fitted.....Will look for an SD1 or P6b flywheel now.
