Welcome to the forum of the future.... again....

Making old links redirect won't work. Think I just need to get it working with Google etc correctly.

I've made some changes on the google dashboard. Let's give it a couple of days and see if that improves matters.

Like the new look, Rich. A much needed revamp, and adding/embedding photos is so much easier! Would be lovely to get 'View my posts' back though as I had to search a bit for my project thread today.

Well, it's always good to move with the time but the big value in CRF was the fact it is a searchable archive. We need to get the past data indexed because that gold needs mining an we're going to get a lot of duplicated queries. For example there is someone asking about uprated radiators vs electric fans. This question has already been done many times.

I like the thumbnailing of pictures, the old forum was a bit messy with large pictures.

Thanks for the efforts.

The way to get it working with Google correctly is to setup 301 re-directs.

Sounds like you know your stuff on this front... I'll take a look at that.

All my experience is really in coding/architecture rather than hosting or the IT side. Learnt lots on the way with the forum :)

it doesnt like it because the forum IDs have changed....

i wonder if it's possible to transpose the IDs... ?

Crikey....yes, all my bookmarked threads are now dead links. Not good. :(

How do you quote a previous post when replying to a thread ?

Hmm that is not good news then. The problem is that, as you say, the upgrade changed the primary key of the threads (the number you see after "t=XX" on the old site and "?threads/XX") on the new one. If the upgrade did not break that, then it would be trivial to write a mod_rewrite rule to fix the old links. But it does, so it's not.

The problem is that those primary keys have changed, and there is no naive (defined as "does not need any context other than the PK") way to convert old thread IDs to new IDs.

With a full dump of both the old database and the new database, it could be possible to map old threads to new threads (it could even be quite accurate if you incorporated more than one thing, for example, text of both subject and first reply to it, perhaps using Levenshtein distances to account for small differences caused by the migration).

It would probably take a developer most of a working day. If you don't have a database dump of the old site, then there's not a lot that can be done.

Is anyone else missing the icon on the tabs and bookmarks in Firefox?

Tested this on my Firefox (not that I use it, but I have Firefox kicking about for testing purposes) and yes, the favicon is missing. Bookmarks won't work for the reason stated above - unless it gets fixed you'll have to delete old bookmarks (if what you mean is the bookmarks you have saved in Firefox, as opposed to on your forum profile), re-find the threads and add them again.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I meant the icons on bookmarks. Thanks for confirming the icon problem isn't just me though.

I do have a bunch of browser bookmarks, but I'm content to wait and see what happens.

Click on "reply" in the bottom rh corner of the post you want to quote.

It's not intuitive, and I have some reservations about the change and its implementation. Hopefully my opinion will change to a positive aspect. :)

Cheers, H.

EDIT: I've had 6 pints though, so this may have a bearing on my opinion. ;)
