Wanted: P5B Coupé & P6 3500 in the USA

I reckon a bit of minor interior freshening should have it looking quite lovely. She’s set to set sail the 18th and should be on US shores on the 28th. Couple days to clear customs and then the final leg of her journey here to Ohio. Can’t wait!

Not too bad, but does need a few bits doing. Possibly a recover on the webasto, some stitching on the interior. At least one front sidelight lens, possibly a front wing.. maybe some work on the front valance.

It'll be interesting to see what it looks like underneath, especially when you unbolt the sill cover.

He did say something to the effect that I need to keep an eye on the transmission fluid level because I guess the car has sat in the garage unused for a number of weeks or possibly months and he said it seemed like it was slow to change gears. If I’m not mistaken, these have a Borg Warner 35 in them correct? If so, I’m pretty certain that the XJ6 also used that box so parts should be easy to come by, even here in the US. Hell, could probably just swap in a complete unit if push comes to shove??

Harvey is the gearbox expert around here.. he'll know what is common between the two, and how to run a car up that's been standing for a while.

Thanks Chris, I’ve noticed that from some other reading I’ve done. Will reach out to him once I’ve physically got the car and can see exactly what he’s describing. Is the oil filter the same spin on affair that all of the subsequent iterations of the Rover V8 used? If so that’s good as I’ve got a few extras for my TVR Griffith 500 so should work on the P6.

If that car is as original then it will have a BW35 fitted. When left unused the converters can drain back into the box itself, artificially raising the level and causing leaks. Running the engine every week or so normally keeps things under control. Some Jags did use the BW35, and there is commonality with a lot of the internals but a Jag box won't be a straight swap into a P6B.

It looks like you've got yourself a nicely kept example of the breed. I look forward to you sharing your driving impressions once you've taken delivery of the car. Mind you don't sit on what looks like it might be a pair of spectacles on the passenger seat!
I doubt your Griff oil filters will fit, I think they'll have the same thread as the later V8s used from the SD1 onwards. Feel free to post a pic or two of your TVR! Even if isn't a "classic Rover", in my opinion they are a classic and powered by basically the same engine, albeit refined and massaged to give a fair bit more oomph. A Griffith 500 has been on my wish list since it debuted. When they were very new I heard one rumble out of a basement garage in the City of London and thunder off. It made a great sound, but was a bit too garish in a ghastly flip-flop paint.

Appreciate that Harvey. With snow on the ground here in Ohio, and hence road salt, the car will unfortunately stay laid up for a few more months unless we have a string of dry days, but maybe when I take delivery of it, I’ll have a chance to drive it a bit and pinpoint some more info on the gearbox ‘issue’.

Thanks for that info on the oil filter. I’ll order up some service items then from the usual suspects for P6 parts. Here are a couple shots of my Griff (TR6 in the garage in the background). I’ve also got a Dolly Sprint and a 2500S Estate. Needless to say, people in my neighborhood think I’m a bit mad with all these RHD cars! And actually, now I think of it, I own more RHD cars than LHD, lol!

It’s here! Had my first drive yesterday. As it has been absolutely pouring down rain since, I’ve not taken it out yet again but the initial impressions were great. Starts, runs and drives incredibly smoothly and the car is in extremely nice condition and everything works. One can tell it is a quality car...

Few pics of her in the US..

Looks nice. Oil pressure looks a little high for the speed.. looks like your high beam stalk is on too ;)

Glad you've found a nice example.

Chris; thanks for noting about the stalk! As for the oil pressure, ‘‘twas quite a chilly day and the coolant temp was barely getting into the green band so I reckon that had something to do with it. Haven’t driven it again yet due to weather but may take it out for a trot this coming week as we’re granted unseasonably warm temps here yet again (was 70F yesterday...unbelievable).

are you going to leave the car as RHD then ? I couldnt imagine driving a LHD for long around here

I see your brilliant photos , good to see but did you take your P6 out in the rain yet? Mine was a bit of a shocker the first time out in the rain (back in August last year)

Yes of course the car will remain RHD. It doesn’t bother me. After all, four of my cars are RHD so it better not bother me, ha!

Haven’t driven it in the rain yet but it did get cold here again and I don’t seem to have much of any heat. The temp lever on the left of the console is fully down for max heat but don’t seem to feel anything but chilly air coming out. Have some checking to do...

Nothing wrong with driving a LHD car in the UK. My Mustang is LHD..
