hi all!

as the title may suggest, the enginein my 1973 3500S (66,560 miles) leaks like a sieve. the whole of the front of the engine is coated in oil and im fed up with it looking such a mess

i suspect the flames traps and breather pipes may need a clear out, but if worst comes to worst i may have to replace the front oil seal.

I'd like to know if this is a straoghtforward job, and if so, would someone be kind enough to give me a rough guide on how to do it, I'd really appreciate it! im very keen to learn how to fix things on the car so this may or may not be a good starting point

thanks all

Renew the flametraps and engine breather filter, make sure the pipe into the block at the rear of the engine that the engine breather filter fits to is clear, make sure that the two pipes that go into the carbs from the flame traps are clear, and the stubs that come out of the rocker covers are also clear. Replace any perished or blocked hoses. Wash the engine and check for leaks.

Don't use a steam cleaner or go crazy with a Kärcher pressure washer! Get some 'GUNK' brand degreaser, paint it on with a paintbrush, wash it off with the brush and warm water. Don't just lob a bucket of water over the engine! Painstakingly brush away all the crud and keep rinsing the brush. Fastidious attention to all the various electrical connections and wires and hoses will hopefully avoid causing any damage. Wear latex gloves or use a barrier cream on your bare hands before you get stuck in. Have fun. A nice clean engine and engine bay makes maintenance much more pleasant.

i find a pump up 1.5 litre garden sprayer great for washing it off...enough to help wash but not too agressive -and use hot water out of your taps
(after a soak with your preferred cleaner)
try it
