Valve Timing

Looking at the rounded ends on the cam wheel lock nuts, it has been off before. Also the majority of tappet clearances were around 20 thou, which would not have helped performance.
Still, I now have the opportunity to put all that right.

when I mic’d the shims, the smallest was 400 thou.
when I read the manual it points to a max of 352. Single shims on this one.
did they use a bigger range at some point.

Engine all back together, with new chains and tensioners. I have used the big white book and followed the process of pegging the crank and cam and refitting the can chain wheel using the vernier on the top wheel.

i have turned the engine over a few revolutions and it is all free as would be expected.

i have been re-reading the white book to ensure I double check each step, when I looked at the comments about later models with the EP mark on the flywheel not aligning with the pointer when the crank it pegged ( which is my set up )
the book says to line up the EP mark with the pointer, but does not mention pegging the crank. It says to remove the cam drive wheel, peg the cam, and adjust the drive wheel using the vernier.

am I reading it correctly?

i have set mine with crank and cam both pegged, meaning the pointer is just out of line with the EP mark.

will I need to redo this and not peg the crank, but use the pointer only?

As far as i understand it, you did it correctly, there is no need to change anything. The way that i understand the book, is that for late engines, when the crankshaft is pegged, the pointer will not align completely, but this is not somethinh to worry about. After all, for practical reasons it could not be the opposite. If the crank is not firmly pegged as it was designed to, it is not practical to try and find another way to hold it to the required point until you adjust the camshaft timing.

Sounds very sensible and obvious. The wording in the book leaves a little room for doubt.
happy now,
I can put the rocker cover on and full rebuild complete
