Valve shimming

Hi Team,

I am just about to replace the head on my P6 to put it back to a TC. Someone in the past had put an SC head and carb on it, and left the TC bits in a box. I had the head tested and they found a knackered valve guide so that could be the reason?

Question: As I am changing the head completely but using the same cam and rocker gear (from the SC head), am I best to leave the tappet shims out completely and measure the gap, or put the shims that are currently under each tappet back in and measure from there? I am in New Zealand and have no idea where I will get shims if I need additional ones.

You’ll want to measure the shims, put them in and assemble the tappets and camshaft them measure the gap. The shims are needed for a baseline as the rest on the top of the valve stems. Without the shims the tappets will rest on the top of the valve spring seats.

I did make a spreadsheet to help with calculating shim heights that you might find handy. P6 4 cylinder valve shim calculator Excel spread sheet.

Here you go. Downloaded for me. But technology is fickle. Fill in the green cells with info you have:
[1] Valve clearances at start with engine stone cold
[2] Thick shim for each current setup
[3] Thin shim for each current setup

The new total shim value you need is in the blue cells.
