Valance stud plates - and outer brackets!

Hallo,
Just removed my front bumper after preparing and painting the new valance ready for replacement....only to find the stud plate nuts are rusted solid. Can anyone tell me the exact size of these nuts, also the ones holding the outer bumper brackets on? I don`t have the correct size ring spanner, and most of my other tools are in another part of the UK...it`s a long story :p Any help gratefully appreciated. Was wondering if it`s possible to destroy the stud plates in some way-hacksawing maybe- then getting new ones, or is this a bit drastic? Also, while I`m here, I need a complete set of bumper iron rubbers, front and rear, that would be 3 pairs? Are they all the same?

Cheers, Drew

The stud plate nuts are 7/16" UNF. The stud plates at the front slide into place and butt against the inner surface of the valance. The studs themselves pass through the elongated holes in the valance and the wing flange, then the washers and nuts screw down onto the wing flange.

When the nuts/washers are removed, normally the stud plate should just slide out. If it is rusted or held in with underseal you may have a little bit of a battle, but you should be able to loosen these and extract them with perseverence. Ian Wilson of Rover Classics sells new stud plates (details on his website), but I have found that larger washers are necessary to prevent them falling through the elongated holes. Some time ago I managed to pick up a pair of stainless steel front stud plates off Fleabay but I think these were a one-off.

IIRC the bolt heads for the outer bumper irons are 9/16", where the inner ones are held by 1/2" nuts and bolts.

I hope this helps.

Hi Drew,

I seem to remember that the nuts on the stud plates are 7/16 across flats, and the outer bumper iron bolts are 9/16 across flats. I would recommend using a decent single hex socket on the bumper iron bolts though. They will most likely be very tight!! If you work the spanner backwards and forwards on the stud plates, it should work them freee of the front valance and wing, as they are only slotted in, as opposed to going through a hole. I've seen plenty of P6's with nuts and bolts in their place in the past!

Ianp6man keeps the bumper iron gaitors, and the stud plates in stock. rover-classics.co.uk.

Hope this helps:D
