V8 Whining at 2000 RPM

Some advice on this would be ideal, but you will have to excuse my ignorance as I have never owned a rover V8 before-

My v8 runs slightly rough when started from cold, which is no great issue, I can tend to whatever needs it has. However, when the RPM goes over 2000, a whining noise develops from (what sounds like) the rear of the engine. The higher the RPM, the louder and more intense the whining noise.... it's concerning me in all honesty!!

any advice/tips would be great

Thanks

One bit of info any advisor will need to know first : Is your car an auto or manual gearbox ?
Do you hear the noise when driving on the road or stationary in neutral/or park ?

Hi there.

It's an auto box. It only seems to do it when stationary and in Park. When moving it doesn't do it.

Thanks

Initially, your noise points me towards a possible problem with the torque converter, but I am not well versed with autos.
However, the member who will best advise you is harveyp6 he is THE oracle on auto boxes and things
associated with them here. If he is not too busy I am sure he will pick up this query for you or if you wish PM him for direct contact.
All the best

If the noise is only there in PARK and not NEUTRAL as well that pretty much rules out a blocked gearbox filter as that will whine in both, and also when you're moving it's just that a lot of the time you can't hear it. Add in your rough running from cold and it could be an intake air leak so I'd look at that posibility as well. But like all noises there's no substitute for actually hearing it.
Alternators can also make the same kind of noise.
