v8 still not right

well arfter new plugs leads coil eletronic ignishon my v8 still running pants will have another run through it all again just to see if i put a lead on wrong or somthing silly i forgot if dont sort it soon it will have to go to the big scrap yard ? as waisting good money that i could spent on my other car

Describe for us exactly what is happening - the v8 is a pretty simple engine (in the scheme of things) and shouldn't be too difficult to sort.

It may seem tedious as you have probably done it all a few times already, but its worth going over everything once more step by step. I have been in situations where I have checked things a few times, only to find on the third check that it was wrong all along and I can't have checked it properly the first two times!

Has it never run right, or did you change/tweak anything before it started to run badly?

where do you live? Maybe if you live near someone on here they can lend a hand... for the sake of an engine no p6 should be scrapped... They're all worth more than the price of an engine nowdays thank goodness....

Sometimes best to start from scratch even if it means going over old ground. Start with a compression test, then timing, firing order and give the plugs a clean.A quick check that both carbs are set pretty much the same in terms of closed throttle and jet height and you should then have a chance of getting it to a state where you can start tuning it.

All well and good fitting electronic ignition--did you check for any lateral rocking on top of distributor-also did you check
springs on fly weight to advance unit---probably not---most people in the past would junk points for electronic-only to discover dizzy worn

had a look at the old girl idal needs ajusting and most probaly timing just seams that out of all the p5 p6 that ive owend this is the werst one??? lol will hav another mess with sat or sun?? thanks for all the help and im in crystal palace se19

is it the higher compression engine? found mine quite hard to get into the sweet spot, but now it is, it goes like stink.

erm i dont know? and all the things that you are all saying are things ive forgot or is it old age lol will have another tinker and let you all know thanks

just a thought--if not leads and distributor--take inlet manifold and gasket off and check cam lobes on 7 and 8 are not worn away--

i think i mirt be there nearly? lol just got to get a balljoint for carbs?? and turn idal up a bit more as had it tiking over on its own and when i blip the throttal revs ok just bit popy when could so when part gets hear ill do it and hope all ok then next bit will be gear serletor plate and better steering wheel and find power steering bit? but thank to all of you for help back soon :)

yep slowley lol but allso have my other old girl to sort out but need good wether for that one??? but things looking up and got to sort house out to but will get out and about may see you on the road????

as for good weather----last sunday was welding outside on my ford consul as rover was inside
having another set of spiders put on rear drive shafts===while under there am considering using Vauxhall omega rear diff and shafts as I know they can take v8 power---- if get time will measure up next weekend.
And yes hope to see you out on road mate 8)

Hi Chris, I certainly agree, you can't go scrapping Rover V8's these days, just not done. I had a similar problem last year where I couldn't achieve an even idle speed, did all the checks as you discribe and could find no fault (I have boyer brandsden electronic ignition on my V8, this still retains the points but only as a switch therefore very little power going through them) I have a multimeter to check dwell angle (points gap at 15 thou) etc and I noted that the dwell angle could change astonishingly over a short time, e.g. set it at 27 deg then after 10 miles or so it could be 20 deg or 30 deg ?? the problem was the moving plate in the dizzy, where the plate pivots on the small pin, the bush had worn so there was excessive play allowing the plate to move and therefore I couldn't maintain the correct dwell angle, so I fitted another moving plate which had no play at the bush and presto!! spot on idling, incredible the difference this has made to the car.

The main fault is the nylon nut used on the adjuster on side of distributor---nylon strips out---solution is to carefully weld a 3ba nut in place of nylon then adjust dwell as normal---done 3 or 4 now.

I just use a points nut on the end of the adjuster, and with the nylon still in place the nut is held by that. It takes seconds, I've done loads, and I've never had a problem with any of them afterwards.

Chris_V888 symes is right the camshafts are worn out and are in need of replacement. Kind regards, Alanj.
