V8 rings - worth doing/economical

Hi,

I'm refreshing a 100,000 mile 10.5:1 engine. Compression is even but about 15-20 lb down on factory figures as you might expect.

My question is how difficult is it to re-ring the motor and is it cost effective to keep it running in top condition rather than look to a new engine in say 50,000 miles?

I'd hone the bores and fit new rings providing the bores are in good condition. I wouldn't bother to take the engine out to do it either.

It's difficult to give a time, but with the heads removed you just need to remove the exhuast if required to enable removal of the sump, then the oil pickup and windage tray, then remove the pistons, remove their rings, clean the grooves, hone the bores, then reassemble.

Once you have all the bits, it shouldn't be more than a day extra, I'd think.
With the heads already off, half the fight is won.
