V8 problems - Very reluctant.

Having decided to keep my car, i thought that i had better go and run the thing again as it has been idle for a few weeks. After adding a fivers worth of fuel i started the car and let it get warm, but when i tried to rev the car, it felt very reluctant, and lumpy. I have checked over the whole ignition system and replaced the plugs and leads. When i took the fuel filter off, the petrol in it was brown. I have now flushed it,and put it all back together but she still doesent run right. Also when i put the car in gear, she seems to lose all power and i found myself with my foot on the floor just to get it back onto the hardstand. One off the carbs seems to be getting less petrol but i don't think this is the cause. Has anyone got any ideas about why my car won't run right?

Thanks, Speedy ???

Speedy,
if fuel in the pump was brown (assume contaminated with fine rust particles?) then it will have got to the carbs as well.
Suggest take off float chambers and flush these out also - Reset float heights (as these could be out of adjustment). Also, remove carb suction chamber covers, take out springs and pistons, clean needles, check jet heights (controls mixture) change oil (use engine oil or 3 in 1 oil) in dashpot and re-assemble. All this is in workshop manual, take your time, keep everything clean don't have any parts left over when finished!
Regards, John.

After flushing the fuel system the car ran better but was still not right.I have now traced it to the ignition as the car was only running on four cylinders. My rover has an electronic ignition, and it is playing up.My only option is to remove all the electronic ignition and replace it with the normal points and distributor.

Thanks, Speedy

Go back to basics and fit points and a dizzy Speedy.

Get it running on them and then play with electronic ignition later - make sure the thing under the bonnet works BEFORE you start adding extra bits! :D
