V8 performance figures.

......or 7.9 seconds with me at the wheel - tuned up SD1 9.35 engine with slightly lairy cam and rhodes lifters and balanced and this and that and the other!!!)

...... or 6 seconds if you push it off a cliff!

:D

My lightened (another term for cutting the roof off !) 2.2TC managed 10.5seconds using some timing gear. Mind you I took it off the end of the rev counter in 2nd to hit 60 !!

Any one actually tried a standing start acceleration test? To anyone with a degree of mechanical sympathy, its 'orrible!
The strain it puts upon your 'box and clutch is incredible. I know from from experience - I've just had to replace the clutch in mine following an enthusiastic 0-60mph. For the record, my V8 managed 0-60 in 5.5sec. It was a BMW 540 V8 though...

Why you think my auto box squeals in second.....

.....it don't like being held in there upto 80!

Next step is a five speed I think....

My 0-60 runs in the 2.2 were done using proper timing equipment, so I know its accurate.

And yes it is painfull, especially when it went off the rev counter !!

My gearbox has been on its last legs since I got it, but no matter how hard I drive it it just won't break.

And Pete can vouch for how hard my P6 gets thrashed !! In fact I won a time trial in it once, even beating a 325i and Porsche 924 (ok so 924's aint quick..)

By the way BMW only say the 540sport will do 60 in 6.2 seconds (6.4 auto) and from experience its not often you can get close never mind better than the manufacturers figures.

When announced by Rover in 1968 the Three Thousand Five got to 60mph in 9.5 secs according to Rover, 9.7 secs according to CAR (May 1968), 10.4 secs HOT CAR (March 1970), 10.54 secs ROVER Brochure 1971 (Series 2),
10.5 AUTOCAR.
Hope this helps, Regards, John.

Mr Glinn!

You are a sad person knowing all the different times according to the different magazines......

......and even sadder for looking them all up!!!

Don't they have television in Wales these days!??

If they've got no television, I'm sure John could think of better things to do with his time than memorise figures (well the performance type anyway !!).......

We'll just assume he had them on a "post-it note" attached to his monitor........

Personally we've got 4 TV's, so you can imagine how few "figures" I see !!! :(

Its widely known that manufacturers publish the best 0-60 times they managed, probably with optimised tyre pressures and no spare tyre or tool kit, and just enough fuel in the tank to complete the run using the lightest "jockey" they could get. Not fully loaded with old Take-away boxes, wifes "kit" in the glove box, kids toys in the back seat, and 2ton of tools in the boot.

They can get away with this because 99.9% of people don't have accurate timing gear, and they could always say "our drivers are obviously better than you"

Peter,
What is this "television" you speak of?
Some sort of English invention I assume to prevent you and your wife going to bed at the same time as each other.
Regards, John.
