v8 oil pressure

I have a 1971 3500 s p6 and whilst driving it the other day I noticed the oil pressure guage dropping and then climbing until now it reads nothing indicating no oil pressure at all!
Oil levels are ok, sender seems ok and I was just wondering if there is any inherent problems with the oil pumps on this particular engine and if so what is involved by way of remedial action/ repair.
Thanks in anticipation.

Only thing I can suggest is to give the dash a sharp thump on top !!, my oil pressure gauge occasionaly doesn't move, but a sharp thump gets it moving again....

Unfortunately I'm a 4 pot-er so couldn't help with any more engine related problem. :(

hi mr angry,
if the engine is not knocking and the sender unit switches are ok i usually find that it is the gauge that is at fault, but only the contacts at the back, take the dashboard plastic face off, unscrew the pressure gauge and get some emery cloth and clean the metal up, it is just usually a bad connection electrically. hope that helps

Cheers folks but it has definetely got no oil pressure as I rigged up another sender and guage.
I was wondering if mabye the pick up pipe is blocked or is there a pressure relief valve within the pump that may be jamming.
Sounds like a new oil pump.
